A Day Late and a Dollar Short

The LOST withdrawal (and family visiting) got the better of me and my days are all out of whack. I missed the Tuesday night post update! Yikes.

While you're working on Hurley, please add, "What's in the guitar case?" The easy answer is "a guitar," but why? And where is it? Hurley didn't take it with him when they fled the barracks.

I'm clueless.

Has anyone else read The Stand by Stephen King? Since D&C talk about it so much, I decided to read it. I am not a fan of "scary" books, so I had never read King's work. This is not exactly scary.

I had originally intended to wait until I finished the book before bringing it up because I wanted to see how the parallels panned out. But the book is somewhere around 800 pages and I know I have forgotten lots of things already.

I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it, but I do want to discuss it. So, if there are some who have not read it that want to, I can start a different thread to discuss it with those who have.

Please chime in with your opinion!

The copy in our local branch is checked out and due back Saturday. I just reserved it. I've watched the mini-series twice; that may be of limited value. My guess would be for a separate thread.

I really do believe that Hurley DID take the guitar case with him when he fled the barracks.

Jim in Georgia said...

Guitar (too many things to cite)

Ah, now that you mention it, he did. He had filled a backpack with a supply of food and was wearing the pack and carrying the guitar case to meet with Jin. I think that was in "Follow the Leader," which I no longer have on my DVR; the darn thing keeps filling up!

I think it is Charlies guitar in the case and Hurley is bringing it back to him. I just can't figure out what convinced him to return, unless it was the guitar.

Charlie told him to go back. Said they needed him. Hurley said no.

Jack said we need to go back (I think). Hurley said no.

Ben said we need to go back. Hurley said no way!!!

Stranger in a cab says you need to go back, and by the way, you're not crazy. Hurley goes back? Something is missing in the explanation.

PJSander said...

LOL, CM. You are right, we need a bit more in Hurley's transition.

But I think Hurley was the one who said they needed to go back (at the gym where they were playing basketball at Santa Rosa). If so then it is

Charlie tells Hurley "they need you" and Hurley says no.

Hurley says "maybe we should go back" and Jack says never. Hurley says, "Never say never, dude."

Sayid says to do the opposite of whatever Ben says.

Ben says, "go back" and Hurley turns himself into the police.

Hurley is released (ostensibly by Ben, but perhaps by Jacob) and Jacob tells him to go back and whoosh, 24 hours later, he is on that plane.

So that got me thinking. Mrs. Hawking and Jacob both knew about A316. Are they working together? Did Ellie ever meet Jacob on the island? Hmmm.

: ) P

PJSander said...

The guitar case. It isn't Charlie's case (that had stickers all over it) but I am also not sure it has Charlie's guitar inside either.

The guitar Charlie had on the island never made it off the island (at least I never saw it on the helicopter or afterward). It might be ONE of Charlie's guitars - procured from his family or whatever, but I don't think it is the one he had on the island.

Maybe it is an EMPTY case, meant to bring Charlie's guitar BACK from the island? Or maybe inside is proof of Sawyer, et al, surviving the island's move and that is why Hurley was on the plane?

And for one that's actually LOST-related - on day 55, Charlie decided that Aaron needed to be baptized

So no takers on _The Stand_ eh? It is a LONG book and the first part is interesting, but the parallels are remote. In the second half, well WOW. That is all I can say! LOL

Jim, when you've finished it, please let me know and I will open a thread.

Almost as bad as Ayn Rand (IMHO).

Nothing, as in nothing, comes close to being as bad as Ayn Rand. I may have gotten to page five of one book. King's big problem, to me, is the vulgarity in the descriptive text; I don't mind -- depending on the wordy dirds used -- when characters swear, but, "He walked down the *#*%* street," is pointless. I did like Insomnia. It was long, but the plot was interesting

The Stand is now overdue at my local branch, but the nice lady on the other side of the counter said that's often the case with books due on weekends.

I have, btw, been thumbing through (The?) Watchmen in more than one grocery store over the past several weeks. I'm holding out for the library book sale in September; maybe I'll get lucky. In the meantime, if I "go shopping" with my wife often enough, I could finish it.

Jim, you should try PaperBackSwap.com - it is easy to join and a great way to get books very cheaply. That's how I got my copy of the Stand.

I didn't find that there was any foul language OTHER than in character conversation, at least in this book.

DocH, I guess you're not a "move every five years" kind of guy - that would get quite tiring with a library that size! Whoosh.

I look forward to hearing from Tarzan!

CM, interesting thought on the Charles / Ellie vs "one leader at a time" idea. Do you think it is possible that Alpert knew that wasn't really Locke? There was speculation that Ben knew. Maybe that is why Ben and Alpert didn't have to have the conversation about FLocke's plans to kill Jacob - because they both knew it was coming. It did seem out of character, IMO, that Ben didn't go running to Alpert to get him to foil Flocke's plan.

I was not yet a member of this august assembly when "The Little Prince" (TLP) aired, so I went back to check that I wasn't re-hashing old stuff.

The was a change on the LP to the theory page for TLP. It was about who was shooting from the other canoe, but right above that was a comment about a D & C podcast in which Damon said people should read the book - TLP.

In passing, we have a doctor in our area who is also an inspirational speaker. The evening I heard him, he commented that most people think TLP is a children's book, but it's not.

Summary here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Prince

If you don't know or, like I, have forgotten, the story, it might help to stop there for a few minutes. Anyway, I actually have a point. Or at least, I think I do.

The little prince (the person) visits six other asteroids and their inhabitants. The list - with my annotations:

The King
The Conceited Man - Locke or Ben
The Drunkard/Tippler - Jack
The Businessman - Widmore
The Lamplighter - Eloise Hawking
The Geographer

Comments?

Oh, yeah. One of the maps of the Island is at http://lostmap.blogspot.com/ a user there named "anonymous" (I think I know him) has titled the airport on Hydra Island the "James LeFleur international airport." LOL

Hey PJ, It's Wed.

Here are some thoughts.

I am wondering if Jacob is good?

Jacob stoped Kate from being punished for stealing the lunchbox.

Jacob encouraged James to write the letter that controlled his life with the idea of revenge.

Jacob delayed Sayid and allowed Nadia's death causing Sayid to become a assisian for Ben killing off Widmores people.

Jacob brought Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Jin, Sun, HurleyIlana, Braham and the Black Rock to the Island. I assume he also brought the Hot air balloon and the drug plane.

Widmore (abaddon) brought Daniel, Charlotte, Miles, Frank, and Locke to the island. Charlotte, Miles and Daniel were all likely to be born on the island.

Who were the others protecting the island from. During the truce they were allowing Dharma to co exist. They had to have had something to do with the buildings or the tunnels would have been discovered. Also, why didn' Jin discover either Rose and BErnards shack or the Swan site during searched of the grids? Why didn't the otheres discover the Swan station? They seen to know where everything is. Something changed between 1077 and 1992 to cause them to purge Dharma. Perhaps the same thing that ousted Widmore.

Circus Mom said...

On another note, Jack shot a whole lot of people in The Incident. Not very Doctor like at all.

Lindsay said...

Interesting thoughts, JiG! I read through the page you posted and noticed a couple of things...

The King - it says that he can "control" the stars but only by ordering them to do what they would do anyway. That made me think of Jacob, I want to think about that one some more.

The Lamplighter - it says that this is the only adult that the prince meets that cares about something other than himself. Again, need to think on that one some more in relation Eloise.

Want to write more, but babies are crying...nap time is over :(

James LaFleur International Airport... sounds like a DocH funny to me! I chuckled out loud, and I am telling you I needed that!

CM, I like your line of thinking with the "who brought them to the island" thing. I wonder who the "real" Henry Gale really was. Curiouser and curiouser.

I just don't know how they can tie all this stuff up in seventeen hours!

Maybe Beach Guy really lives in the cabin. BG Cabin? (not Jacob's cabin).

Why not? We know where Jacob lives (lived?). Beach Guy lives in the jungle and Jacob lives on the beach. We pretty much know from Ben that the spectre seen and heard by John was not Jacob. Christian says he speaks for Jacob. That doesn't mean that the cabin has to be Jacob's; it only means that Christian knew that Locke would seek Jacob at the cabin.

Question: Why? Horace said, more or less, "Find me, find Jacob." Did Locke find Horace or is the body in the mass grave Sayid's?

Question: If Ben really wanted to save the Island from Widmore's mercenaries, why did he not stop Locke from his -- theoretically -- useless trip to a cabin where Jacob never was?

PJSander said...

This freeking BRILLIANT, JiG. I thought how could that be? But I looked, and it *IS* Horace's jumpsuit that Sayid is wearing:

After poking around other sites, something hit me. I have been saying ever since Des had his conscience time travel exp. that he and Penny would be our A & E. I had doubt after seeing Rose and Bernard wanting to be left alone and started leaning toward them. BUT, I got to thinking that Des is coming back to the island ala Ms. Hawking saying that island isn't done with him yet. I am thinking that when he comes back, Penny won't let him go alone. They may or may not get a chance to link up with the Losties again, but IMO will indeed end up being A & E.

PJSander said...

Hammer, I am torn about A&E. For it to be D&P or R&B, we'd have to see a fair bit more time travel occurring. I feel as if Season 6 has to be set squarely in ONE time "zone" in order for the remainder of the story-telling to be fulfilled.

But, if it has to be one of those two couples, I would say it is more likely D&P just because they WEREN'T in that cave with the original LOSTies. It would just be TOO weird for Rose to have been looking over her own skeleton!

I was just looking at the promo shots for Season 5.

Of "Season Five Off Island," five of the seven are together in 1977; Sun is thirty years off base. Only Desmond is still off (Island). *g*

Of "Season Five On Island," three (including Locke) of the six are dead and Juliet under most definitions would be terminal. Only Sawyer and Miles are on their feet (in 1977).

It was a tough year!

Biggest argument that I know of on the LP is whether a valid UAQ is "With whom is Ellie pregnant?" Most people agree that it's probably Daniel, but that there's enough doubt that we can't say it. There are a few who can't get the idea that "We're writing an encyclopedia" and that we're dealing with facts not assumptions.

There's an interest "spoiler" on youtube about Jack's eye. I don't want to say any more, since it might really be a spoiler, although I think the contributor is wrong in his analysis. If we're allowed to talk about this (PJ?), let's do it.

8) Jim

PJSander said...

Well I steadfastly maintain that Eloise's child in utero can NOT be Daniel. I am not sure if it was here or on TBI, but I know I laid it out. Were Daniel born in late 1977, or 1978, he could NOT be a Physics professor, with a doctorate, at Oxford in 1996. I know they put in that line in his flashback that he was the youngest doctorate recipient at Oxford, but he would have had to finish high school at twelve to pull that off and given that what we saw of him around age eight (at the piano), I just don't see it.

I don't think that they're even shooting next season yet, so any "spoiler" that may be out there is just a guess, IMO. I am okay with you posting a link to the youtube, JiG. Then I will watch it and make a determination as to whether we ought to discuss it.

: ) P

PJSander said...

Saw the "Top Chef Master" episode with D&C. Unfortunately, they, nor any of the writers, really said much. It was a neat show, but there isn't much to recap.

Four chefs (one who was a huge fan, one who had never seen the show and two that did not specify) were given ingredients that might be found on a deserted island ("wild" boar, chicken, eggs, papaya, yams, etc.) and access to a list of canned food (that might have been dropped by DHARMA) from which they could choose items to buy at Whole Foods. Their list had a DHARMA logo on the cover, which was cool.

The chefs were then given two hours to create a dinner which was served to three judges, D&C and assorted unnamed LOST writers.

The meals were served to this panel by wait staff dressed in DHARMA jumpsuits.

D&C were shown giving their opinions on a couple of the dishes, but otherwise there was no mention of LOST.

The chef with the best "rating" for their meal was moved forward to another challenge later in the season.

C'est ca.

Hmmm. JiG discussed the fates of the characters in the Season Five photos, but on another site, I came across the Season Four photo (the same as on TLI home page) and I found something interesting!

Everyone on it is still part of the show - though not necessarily alive. The photo shows Claire (status unknown, but the character is returning), Locke (dead but moving), Sayid (badly wounded... for now), Juliet (wounded and presumed dead, but well... you know).

None of our "really dead" characters - Charlotte and Daniel specifically, are in that photo. I do recall D&C saying something about "returning to the roots" of the storytelling and having Season Six mirror the first season.

I don't know that it is significant, I just found it interesting. I had a dream last night that LOST Season Six started today.
