Namaste

From Wikipedia

Namaste is a common spoken greeting or salutation in the Indian subcontinent. Taken literally, it means "I bow to you". The word is derived from Sanskrit (namas): to bow, obeisance, reverential salutation, and (te): "to you". Namaskar is considered a slightly more formal version than namaste but both express deep respect. It is commonly used in India and Nepal by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists, and many continue to use this outside the Indian subcontinent.

In the word namaste there is sandha or coalescence between the two Sanskrit words - namah + te - meaning " I bow to that (divinity) inherent in you." Also common is a polite form using the imperative astu meaning "let there be": namo 'stu te literally means "let there be a salutation to you."

Namaste is one of the few Sanskrit words commonly recognized by Non-Hindi speakers. In the West, it is often used to indicate South Asian culture in general. Namaste is particularly associated with aspects of South Asian culture such as vegetarianism, yoga, ayurvedic healing, and Hinduism.

In recent times, and more globally, the term "namaste" has come to be especially associated with yoga and spiritual meditation all over the world. In this context, it has been viewed in terms of a multitude of very complicated and poetic meanings which tie in with the spiritual origins of the word. Some examples:

* "I honor the Spirit in you which is also in me." -- attributed to author Deepak Chopra

* "I honor the place in you in which the entire Universe dwells, I honor the place in you which is of Love, of Integrity, of Wisdom and of Peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are One."

* "I salute the God within you."

* "Your spirit and my spirit are ONE." -- attributed to Lilias Folan's shared teachings from her journeys to India.

* "That which is of the Divine in me greets that which is of the Divine in you."

* "The Divinity within me perceives and adores the Divinity within you."

* "All that is best and highest in me greets/salutes all that is best and highest in you."

* "I greet the God within."

That said, these are all arguably simply attempts at translating the same concept, which does not have a direct parallel in English. In Buddhism, the concept may be understood as Buddha nature.

I honestly don't care WHAT it means as long as it comes with a new episode!

Hammer said...

Thanks Rita.

I have to admit...I sent a question in about the runway to D&C for the podcast fan questions...trying like hell to find out. When I saw the plane come through the flash...then saw the island...I jumped to my feet, wife asking what the hell I was doing....staring, saying, "please, please, please" and when he 'is that a runway'....wahoooo.

Runway?

I'm in mourning! Well, it may have resembled a runway. If Frank had really tried to put that bird onto that dirt strip (after flying it like it was the Beechcraft!), the wheels would have gone into the dirt, the struts would have snapped, and... Oh, shut up, Jim; quit trying to be so real... Frankly, TPTB have kinda disappointed me. I expected Neptune to reach up out of the sea and deposit the plane gently on Hydra.

Other stuff:

What did Sawyer saw about Faraday?

Is there anything Christian is not in charge of?

What is the deal with Radzinsky building the model of the Swan?

What did (adult) Ben expect to find at the Hydra Station? Did he know any idea what year it is?

What can we expect from teen(?) Ben? Will he tell Richard about Sayid?

Enough, already.

That's how I see it. Looks good to me, DocH. Except the last one should read 2007 - 30 - 19*7*7 instead of 1997.

I wonder if that ambiguous "three years" is going to end up being problematic.

One thing that was on the podcast that I found notable was that, according to D&C, Rebecca Mader took it upon herself to change the script that Michael Emerson read when talking about Charlotte's vital statistics. D&C said that the script read that CSL was born in 1970, and she changed it to 1979, because she didn't want to be thought of as 37 (age-ist b*tc#). LOL.

Anyway, they say that they probably should have looped it to say the correct year, but confirmed that the little girl that Daniel referred to as Charlotte could BE Charlotte because the years were off in that earlier scene.

What I didn't get was why they didn't just say that Ben was lying, rather than admit a mistake. I think that might be key. Not sure.

LOL. Yeah. They said something along those lines. It was a facetious throw away line, like it wasn't as if the entire SHOW revolved around EXACT dates or anything.

I hadn't thought about Charlotte dying because RM messed up the script. Truth is that I would have thought that ME would have known enough NOT to change it just on RM's say-so. He had been in D&C's employ for quite a lot longer.

Very curious.

Happy B'day, Hammer! I think I can remember being forty...

(I'll eventually remember to ask for update notices when we start a new thread. This may be related to being older than 92% of the people in the US.)

One of the things I keep screaming about on LP is taking conversation to seriously. Same thing with tags on the screen. 30 years doesn't necessarily mean 10957 days; three years doesn't mean 1095days. We got spoiled by all the references that helped us pin down the days in the first 108 of them.

If the O6 returned to civilization in early 2005, their "three years" could have been up in late 2007. We can't depend on weather to tell us anything; the only action outside the South was Locke's stopover in NYC, where Walt was wearing a jacket/vest combo.

I need to re-watch the "Namaste." Little things keep tugging at me.

Wouldn't they just yell cut and make her do another take if she didn't follow script?

PJSander said...

That wasn't the first time they said that, either, Jim. They said it in a podcast last year too. Apparently, last year, they had NOTHING to do with the pop-ups. It sounded like this year at least someone on the production staff looked them over, but that THEY did not consider them canon.

About Ben and Sayid:

Ben was in the restroom when the crisis started. Small space, easy to brace yourself, less injury, at least less VISIBLE injury. I think I argued against this in "316."

Sayid's a puzzle, but I think he and Ben still have something working. (Let's leave young Ben out of this for now.) I detect the tricky legal fingers of Dan Norton, although we may never see him again. Are Ilana and Caesar really Gabriel (try Gabriella?) and Jeffrey?

Who says Claire (dead or alive) did not time travel? She WAS with her dad the last time we saw her. We saw him WHEN (time) ever he goaded broken leg Locke into stabilizing the wheel. We saw him WHEN (time) ever he met with Sun and Frank. Why can’t she (dead or alive) time travel with her (dead or alive) dad, whom she was with the last time we saw her?

Seems like Locke (dead) time-travelled a little with Ajira and became born again Locke (alive). Maybe that is all it takes to bring back Claire (dead or alive), a tiny time jump.

+++++++++++++
Gave me thought....what if the time jumping is the help Jacob needed? What if Locke turning or fixing the wheel is what he meant by 'help me'? If it worked for Claire???

Wow! I've never spent a lot of time on the Whispers and Whispers transcripts pages. Pyramidhead used to do a lot of work there, but not recently. I suggested a week or so that someone who speaks Latin listen to the whispers FORWARD and find out if they say anything. Widmore is working to be able to change the past, and using Desmond, because he thinks the island is his. Hawkings is working to make sure what happened, happened because she knows that once you can change the future all hell will break loose.

+++++++++++++++
Isn’t that the kind of the whole point of the Valenzetti equation and the numbers? To try to change something to stop the end of the world? One of the ‘factors’ needs to change in order to stop ‘whatever happened, happened’?

Perhaps what happened is Desmond did change things causing the end of the world and changing the number would mean that Desmond could not change things.

That is a bit poetic since Desmond inputed the numbers for 3 years.
