LaFleur

Though I did a quick google search for LaFleur, I didn't come up with anything other than the fact that is a quite prolific surname among Francophones. There was quite a long list of famous people with the last name, but none were philosophers or scientists.

I thought of Fleur Delacour, a character in the Harry Potter books. Other than it just being a literary reference, I didn't really see how there could be a connection.

The fact that "la fleur" in French means flower could be significant, especially with respect to The Little Prince reference earlier in the season.

One interesting thing that I did consider is that in Tunisia, although Arabic is the official language, French is spoken widely, particularly in schools and the media. From Wikipedia: It is widely used in education (e.g. as the language of instruction in the sciences in secondary school), the press, and in business. Most educated Tunisians are able to speak it. Many Tunisians, particularly those residing in large urban areas, readily mix Tunisian Arabic with French.

I wonder if Charlotte also spoke French? Perhaps Pierre Chang taught her?

Completely off topic, but worthy of it, I hope.

I am reading, at long last, The Bad Twin written by "Gary Troup" who was the guy sucked through the engine in the pilot. Other than a couple of "throwaway" lines, I haven't really found anything particularly significant.

EXCEPT: The novel was published in 2005, but was supposedly written PRIOR to the September 2004 crash of O815 (in which the author perished). However, in the novel, a friend of Paul, the main character, tells Paul that the Scottish Feudal system was not formally abolished until November 2004. While this is TRUE (http://www.hmitchell.co.uk/abolition-of-feudal-tenure.htm), November 2004 was two months AFTER the O815 crash. Granted the act was in the works since 2000, but the character SPECIFICALLY mentions a date IN THE FUTURE (to him) when in the book, he speaks as if it has ALREADY happened.

Is this an error? A sign? Have any of you discussed this on other blogs? I may finish the book tonight, and I will see if there is anything else of note.

Good morning! It's Wednesday! Yay! OK, my take on the title:
In the Little Prince, the book, the Prince needed to return to his world to care for his flower - he had left the flower because it had become tiresome and a bit demanding, and he wanted to see what else was out there. In the end, he realized that he loved the flower, it was special to him, and he desperately needed to return to it. In fact, he needed to die to get there. So, the remaining island LOSTies are the "flower" perhaps? Or the Others? - if Locke is the Prince and needs to return to "his people". In any case, I think that this episode references the world, and people - collectively - that are left behind when the Little Prince leaves.

Awesome job Rita.

I had a thought for the 'second' meaning. LaFleur is also a fairly common French sir name. I didn't research to see if we know all of Danielle groups last names....but maybe some sort of tie in?

Anonymous said...

I am hoping for a Rousseau tie in, with the French title it seems likely. We are missing a big piece of the puzzle with her story I'm thinking.

PJSander said...

A Rousseau tie-in is possible, of course, but I think her story-line has been completed, at least for now. JMO.

Great info from the book Rita. After hearing the title my first thought was a person's name. Could it be a new character as suggested by Hammer or an alias used by one of our LOSTies to infiltrate Dharma?

Okay, so I was wrong about how long the RLOSTies were on the island... it really WAS three years to them. Wow.

Did Juliet look a little pregnant at the end?

: ) P

Hammer said...

On the other hand...if I got it right...Locke flashed forward three years and didn't live for three years off island...right?

PJSander said...

TBI is already slow - here is something I posted there that has yet to show up:

I imagine for the "casual" viewer, that episode was infuriating. They wouldn't remember Horace, would have missed the "little Charlotte" reference and get muddled in the three years earlier / later jumps.

For me, though, it was wonderful. I still want to know where Bernard and Rose (and Vincent) are though!

What happened to Olivia? Horace and Olivia were together when Ben was born (or at least we were led to believe that) and appeared to be together when Ben was brought to the island as a boy - which ought to be AROUND this same time period. Ideas?

: ) P

lost4ever said...

LOL PJ. GMTA about Juliet. Wouldn't it be great if Juliet and Kate are on the island pregnant buy Sawyer and Jack.

Hammer,

The pop-ups in TLaDoJB said that he flashed forward ten months, but I don't accept that as canon.

Tasha on TBI suggested Osiris:

Osiris (Greek language, also Usiris; the Egyptian language name is variously transliterated Asar, Aser, Ausar, Ausir, Wesir, or Ausare) was an Egyptian god, usually called the god of the Afterlife.

Osiris is one of the oldest gods for whom records have been found; one of the oldest known attestations of his name is on the Palermo Stone of around 2500 BC. He was widely worshiped until the suppression of the Egyptian religion during the Christian era.[1][2]The information we have on the myths of Osiris is derived from allusions contained in the Pyramid Texts (ca. 2400 BC), later New Kingdom source documents such as the Shabaka Stone and the Contending of Horus and Seth, and much later, in narrative style from the writings of Greek authors including Plutarch[3] and Diodorus Siculus.[4]

Osiris was not only a merciful judge of the dead in the afterlife, but also the underworld agency that granted all life, including sprouting vegetation and the fertile flooding of the Nile River. The Kings of Egypt were associated with Osiris in death — as Osiris rose from the dead they would, in union with him, inherit eternal life through a process of imitative magic. By the New Kingdom all people, not just pharaohs, were believed to be associated with Osiris at death if they incurred the costs of the assimilation rituals.[5]

Osiris was at times considered the oldest son of the Earth god, Geb,[6] and the sky goddess, Nut as well as being brother and husband of Isis, with Horus being considered his posthumously begotten son.[6]

Osiris was later associated with the name Khenti-Amentiu, which means 'Foremost of the Westerners' a reference to his kingship in the land of the dead.

So I have rewatched... a couple of observations:

Juliet, Daniel, Jin and Miles are all sitting around a picnic table at night, waiting for Sawyer. There are some REALLY nice look sandwiches, UNEATEN on the table. Jin hasn't eaten a decent meal in nearly four months, Juliet probably two months, Miles, a few weeks (not since that yummy GRENADE anyway). I get that Daniel is verklempt, but shouldn't the rest of them be GOBBLING up that food?!

Josh Holloway can ACT! Watching it the second time, knowing that in 1977, Sawyer loves Juliet, you can REALLY see it in his eyes when Juliet comes out of the infirmary to talk about Amy and her baby.

My vote for the most often asked question is "who is the baby" to whom Amy just gave birth.

I've been trying to get a handle on the "time qualities(?!)" of some of the items we've seen.

First, the compass. Locke gave the compass to Alpert in 1954 and Alpert gave the compass to Locke in 2005 and Locke gave the compass to Alpert in 1954 and Alpert gave... You get the idea. Where did the compass come from?

Second, the well, the rope and the Orchid. (Sounds like The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.) We have a rope sticking out of the ground, the broken down well with no hole, the functional dry well, the Orchid under construction, the abandoned Orchid and the Orchid in ruins. Who did what to whom and in what order?

I think we need to distinguish between pregnancy success among the Others and pregnancy success among DHARMAites. I put an item on the Pregnancy(cies)/Theory page of LP some time ago about the Island punishing the Others for not broadening their genetic base.
I think 5x08 was more of a "build Juliet's confidence level" episode.

lost4ever said...

As Desmond would be too old Thomas would be too young. In 1995, Desmond was dating Ruth for 6 years and ended the relationship a week before they got married. As duke pointed out on TBI, Thomas and Claire appeared to be in their early early 20's in 2004, not 27.

lost4ever said...

I think the pregnancy issue relates to Ben and his leadership some how. Ben was born premature, when Emily was in her 7th month, and that seems to be the same time island women were having their difficulties.

Besides being too old, Desmond was the eldest of 4 brothers.

Also, the women on the island were dying in the middle of their 2nd trimester which would be about 4 1/2 months.

My opinion on this is that the Others are being punished because they put Ben in charge. It's irony that they die giving premature birth like Ben's mother did.

Another issue to consider is that the Others seem to be made up of both native islanders and Ben's off island recruits...and both types were having the preg. issues...I think.

PJSander said...

Eh, I still think the pregnancy issues didn't start until after the purge.

As for the Others being a mix of natives and recruits, that is true. Of the recruits, though, is Juliet not the only one still "alive" at this point? I imagine that the Others at the temple are probably Alpert Others / Hostiles / natives.

Agreed PJ about the pregnancy issues, after Ben took control.

You and Hammer sparked my brain for a minute, what if the baby is one of Ben's Other's from the first couple seasons, maybe Goodwin, Ethan, or Pickett? I can't remember their ages off-hand, but I have exhausted all other possibilities as to whom it could be.

Good point. Because I'm not willing to trust Ben any further than I can throw him, I've never been really sure how many of the Others came from off-Island. The question of statements being canon continues (ad infinitum?). Daniel said "Charlotte" when he saw the little girl in 1974, so it it has to be her. WRONG!

PJSander said...

Jim, perhaps it is the definition of canon that is tripping people up?

From Merriam-Webster:
canon: a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works [the canon of great literature]

a: an accepted principle or rule b: a criterion or standard of judgment c: a body of principles, rules, standards, or norms

Canon, to some, might mean "pertinent" to the program, in that it is part of the LOST lore. While to others, canon might mean "fact" as it relates to LOST. Something a character SAYS is part of the lore, but is not necessarily FACT, as characters are human, and as such, not always completely honest.

I don't even want to READ what is going on over there *bg* but perhaps to prove your point, you could say that Ben told Jack that his name was Henry Gale. That doesn't make it TRUE, but it does make it part of LOST lore.

Don't envy you!

: ) P

Hammer said...

I agree with PJ's thoughts. And Jim is correct too....that doesn't make her Charlotte...just don't get mad at people using the 'hint' for theory support. :)

Jim in Georgia said...

About "Canon":
I'm not mad. I think people often want things to be true. Charlotte describes meeting a scary man who told her never to come back to the Island. Later, in personal time, Daniel sees a little red head and whispers, "Charlotte;" people proclaim it to be her. Well, maybe, maybe not. I started a theory section at the end of last season entitled "The death of John Locke." One of the first entries was "Locke's not dead!" Gee, I'm sorry!
When the site managers describe canon as what appeared in episodes, some folks forget unreliable/self-serving narration.
If it wasn't fun, I'd have quit.

Hammer said...

Gotcha JiG...I'm with ya now.

I'm glad spring is around the corner....getting a touch of cabin fever. :)

Anonymous said...

On the "canon" debate, I feel that only things that have been proven, backed up by evidence, or told to us by D&C are canon. Things SAID by characters may or may not prove to be canon in the end. People are unreliable.
However, that said, it is frustrating to me if we can NEVER count on ANYTHING - but must second guess EVERYTHING. I don't mind lots and lots of mystery, but at some point, things have to become clear and "wrap up" so to speak. Eventually, we have to KNOW SOMETHING for sure or the show will have to go on forever.
I still think, with all the debate over what is happening, that when the show ends, we will NEVER be able to agree about what the show was about. The debate could go on forever.

Okay, here goes.
Episode: 6x13 (or something like that)
Date: Sep 22, 2004
Action: Desmond watches Kelvin strip off his HAZMAT suit and realizes the Kelvin has lying to him. He decides to follow Kelvin. Instead of following Kelvin to the place where he is working on the Elizabeth, Desmond has a vision of Flight 815 breaking up over the Island and returns to the Swan to press the button. Flight 815 flies safely over the Island to the nearest safe landing and nothing else happens. Does the universe course correct? Of course it...

PJSander said...

Oooh. I can see that. I don't LIKE it, but I can see it.

To me, that would be the same as the end of St. Elsewhere, when the writers made it seem as if the entire series was in the imagination of one of the doctor's autistic son. Or when, at the end of Newhart, "Emily Hartley" woke up as if the entire Newhart series was a dream SHE (from the old series) had. I know it was a play on the ridiculous "Pam Ewing" dream season on Dallas, but STILL.

D&C have joked that no, the entire series is not a figment of Hurley (or Vincent) or any one else's imagination. I could see them doing that, but again, I don't like it!

Jim in Georgia said...

One of the first questions I asked myself was whether I was doing a "St. Elsewhere." I don't like it, either. JIG 8)

Anonymous said...

Jim, I don't think your ending will come to pass. I am looking at the time and course correction like this.

There is a actual true, or Real Life Time (RLT). Right now on the show that time is a day or two after flight 316 crashed. Everyone that is with Locke is in that real time. Anything that happened before that date in 2008 already happened and can't change. This means all the time traveling happened and everything associated with it. The purge, the crash of 815, The O6 returning to the "real world". Nothing they do in the past will change what we have seen because it all has happened before the current RLT.

Course correction happens only in the future, relative to the event it is correcting. If Charlie was supposed to get hit by lightning and die and Desmond stops it then something else will happen minutes, days, weeks later to kill Charlie. No one will go to a time before it happened and stop Desmond from saving Charlie. It already happened in RLT.

RLT is the farthest time in the future that we are shown. Right now it is 2008. If we had seen a RLT and everything that had happened to that point would have already happened. We may not have seen it yet.

Sawyer and his group can change nothing before 2008 but what they do now can affect anything after real time, or post 2008.

Dose this make any sense?

Circus Mom,
Yes, it does make sense. Btw, I really hope you're right and I'm wrong.
The monkey wrench in the whole thing — for all of us — is Desmond. He's special; what does that mean? 8)

Nice Explanation, CM. Didn't like the ending theory either JIG.

Desmond was told he was special by Faraday. Walt's first FB was titled "Special". Locke has been told he was special throughout his life. I have no idea what "special" means, but these three people seem to have different characteristics of the term.

My current take on Des's being 'special'.

Dan knows 'something' about Des. He know Charlotte is about to die from the TD...in a desperate attempt to save her, he hopes that Des is 'special enough' to help 'change' things. No go, she dies anyway.

The 'special' is that he can communicate conciously without having to phsyically travel in time...just get message to his brain in the time needed.

Docarzt, who appears to be a new user on LP, commented that one could hear Chang say "LaFleur" in the Dharma Booth video. It's the last line: "No, LaFleur, what are you doing?" I listened to the one LP links to and then to two others on YouTube and I agreed. I changed the transcript and I'm currently looking for the remaining pieces of of my scalp. 8)

Take a listen. There are/were four copies on YouTube. I searched for Lost Chang.

It's an interesting thought. Daniel is recording Chang. I've always held the the first non-Chang voice heard is Jack, btw. Just as they're finishing, LaFleur the cop shows up to shut the session down. Why?

I watched the Chang video again and I agree that he said "LaFleur, what are you doing" at the end. I'm not positive that we are hearing Jack's voice, though it probably is. Interesting! I did notice that he called the baby "him" so if that was the baby we saw earlier, it confirms (for me) that it is likely Miles (like we thought).
They seem pretty sold on the "you can't change the past" idea - that the purge MUST happen. Is that the writer's way of telling us that it CAN/MIGHT BE changed?

Hammer said...

Oh snap! Have I been missing something? Has Tarzan always been Locke...er Jeremey?

PJSander said...

Well I watched again and I didn't hear "Lafleur" but he said SOMETHING right before "what are you doing?"

Anyone else have the feeling that on TBI maybe=flyboy?

You may be right L4E. I know there are definitely some users (outside of Tarzan! LOL) who are suffering from MPD (Multiple Poster Disorder) and posting under different names. That is their prerogative, but it makes it difficult to take theories seriously when you don't recognize the name.

I have read that in years past DocH, seems as funny as ever. My favorite part was regarding the Juliet/Sawyer.

And then depending on where your ~*allegiances*~ lie, you had one of the following three reactions:

a) AWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!
b) EWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOO!!!!!!!!!
c) *snooze* where’s Ben/Sayid/Desmond/interesting people!?

I'm still laughing at that. TY for the link.

Not relly sure if maybe=flyboy, just a guess. I did notice that maybe added another post just as flyboy does with "Oh and one more thing I forgot to mention".

Anyone have any suggestions about a new post for this week since we don't get a new episode? Do we get to see LaFleur enhanced? I haven't checked yet.

lost4ever said...

abc.com has an enhanced episode of Lafleur at 9:00. I thought we waited until late January so there were no breaks. Someone must have screwed up the timing of the scheduling.

duke's comment.....oh well. And now in my best Tom Hanks' (GUMP)impression, and that's all I have to say about that.

Jim in Georgia said...

Don't know if it's true, but someone on the LP made a comment about these little breaks ensuring that the season finale ends up during sweeps. 8)

This gave me a giggle while trying to find the site Rita referenced.
