Withdrawal - week one

For a brief moment this morning, I thought, "Oh it is LOST day!" Then I realized, that while Wednesday might forever be called LOST day, there is no new LOST today. *sigh*

I plan to spend tonight watching The Incident again tonight.

How are YOU dealing with the withdrawal?

How am I dealing with the withdrawal? Not well, I'm afraid. I keep thinking "I have to get everything done early so I can watch LOST tonight" - then remembering that THERE IS NO LOST TONIGHT!!!!! (Whimpering) Watching an early episode tonight might help.

Yes, Doc. I think that scene has replaced the Penny finds Desmond scene as my "wow" favorite, moving scene. If Josh Holloway doesn't get an Emmy nod for that episode, I am officially protesting!

LOL DocH. Miss Kim and I were chatting online (yay facebook) last night and singing your praises - you always have a good chuckle for us!

That is a LOT of work for the Fantasy League folks to "correct" but you are right that most of our standings will likely improve!

I am off to go read the Ack Attack!

Does the fact that some of us guys are impressed by the Sawyer/Juliet relationship mean that we're...sensitive?

Ick!

I know that this is blasphemy, but I actually thought that the Juliet/Sawyer scene was super cheesy! First of all, Juliet was being a total pain in the rear the entire episode. Then they had the whole Titanic reenactment scene. I thought it was pretty lame. Des and Penny were WAY better!

PJSander said...

Not blasphemy, KtG, just a difference of opinion. I didn't find it cheesy at all, but I really liked Sawyer and Juliet together, so that probably plays a part in my opinion!

DocH, I sure hope that was you that I just accepted into the FB group!

Okay, just finished TI for the second time. A couple of notes: yes, the scene with Juliet and Rachel as little girls was VERY modern. Too modern. Not the kind of thing they would do by accident. Very odd. And again I say TERRIBLE casting for the kids.

On the coffee table in Juliet's home was a book called Mysteries & Ancient Americas (see it here: http://tinyurl.com/MAAJuliet).

The book came out in 1986. If Juliet was about ten in that flashback, that would make her year of birth ABOUT 1976. She was recruited by Alpert in 2001. Could she have been a SPECIALIST in fertility at 25, when medical school takes eight years and a residency for OB/GYN is four years?! I think not.

So next question - WAS that really a flashback? or a misplaced memory? or a red herring? or a big fat mistake?

Next, Sawyer said in 1977 that in 1976 (last year) when he was eight, a con man killed his parents. That puts him born in 1968. Would you have figured Sawyer at 40ish? Not me. I can get over that.

Jacob DID touch Hurley on the arm in the cab - there was a question (not sure if it was here or TBI) about whether or not Jacob touched Hurley.

Finally a really big continuity error! At the end of the episode, Juliet is at the bottom of the drill hole and blood runs out of her mouth down her right cheek. The angle switches to the bomb and when we see Juliet again, and for the rest of the scene, there is no blood there.

Michael Emerson has never disappointed me, but the scene under the foot, leading up to his stabbing Jacob, was perhaps his finest work. I hope that THIS is the episode D&C submit for Emmy consideration (and not the Variable, which did NOT live up to the Constant).

Whew.

Okay, so maybe I have been under a rock in a cave on an island somewhere, but I just found out that ABC.com has episode recaps! Can they be considered canon?

If so, the statue has been confirmed as Taweret. Trouble is that in every depiction of the statue I have seen, Taweret is visibly pregnant and I don't think our statue is.

From LP: While ABC has confirmed the statue to be Taweret, and it has since been confirmed by Wired Magazine's May 2009 issue edited by JJ Abrams, the canonicity of this confirmation is still disputed by some. Some fans believe the statue to be that of the Egyptian god Sobek or the Egyptian god Anubis, instead of Taweret. hmmm.

I think so. I started watch the re-runs on SciFi last fall. When it became obvious that they weren't going to finish the reruns before season five started, I switched over to the full-length episides on ABC.com. I never saw anything that made me suspicious.

I know the episodes are canon, but have you READ the recaps, JiG? I found a seven page recap (of just part one) of TI. There appear to be recaps of every episode. If it is canon, then I want to read them all!

That is what I thought, Doc. Are you getting this info FROM somewhere, or going on gut instinct? Because if you are right, then 4TS isn't necessarily Taweret, as stated in the recap.

Part of me wants to go back and read all that stuff and the other part is afraid it will say something that will MESS ME UP! LOL

Part 2

The Incident Part 1 recap:

Leaves out the part about catching and filleting the fish.

Describes the sub as being in the holding area and preparing to dive when it has already done so.

Doesn't include Bram's statement that Frank didn't know the answer to the question.

Describes young Sawyer's male relative as Uncle Doug, although that's not in the script (it may be in the credits).

Says young Sawyer pulled off his first con by agreeing not to finish the letter to "Mr. Sawyer;" IMO, this was not established.

Says that Richard said he had been off the Island to visit Locke three times; what Richard really said was that he had been off the Island three times, twice for Locke. (My guess is that Richard wasn't really off the Island for teen Locke.)

Doesn't mention that the jumpsuit Sayid puts on is Horace's.

Says Rose and Bernard built their hut; I'm not sure that was established.

Says Sun finds Charlies rings in the sand; I think it was in the blanket, although there was some sand present.

I don't think I'm being overly picky. The recap reminded me of the Fox recaps of Fringe episodes that Doc and I copy over to Fringepedia to provide a framework for the expanded, correct synopsis. Maybe this is where Lostpedia gets it initial summaries; I never thought of it.

I think a better source is the episodes pages at the LP.

I re-watched Part 1 of this season's finale. In particular, I focused on Jacob's interactions with "the gang". After reading posts about some of the non-canon stuff from the abc recaps, something dawned on me. When Jacob touched Kate, Sawyer, Locke,Sayid, Sun, and Jin was he sealing their fate? Kate's fate was "sealed" as a criminal, Sawyer as a con man, Locke--perhaps his ultimate fate on the island, Sayid as not having direction, and Sun and Jin as taking their love for eachother for granted. As for Jack...hmmmm....he just needed a little push....not sure what that one means. Anyhow--just a thought.

If he is saying (post Ajira) that he was off0island three times - that means, either he never visited science teacher (off-island) OR Ajira was before the Juliet visit in 2001.

Doc, are you saying you think it is possible that A316 landed in, say 2000? That kind of messes up the "30 years earlier" plot points.

Maybe Alpert was talking about three times off island FOR LOCKE or maybe he didn't go off island to talk to the science teacher (and sent Ethan instead?).

The "Cabin Fever" transcript on LP reflects that the science teacher got a call from Portland and had received a call from "Dr. Alpert." Maybe, maybe not. Maybe in the sense that Alpert may have called from the Island, which we know to be possible. Maybe not in the sense that someone on the Mittelos could have posed as Alpert.

Continuity error is a possibility, but the number of times Richard was presented as being "in the U.S." isn't some tiny detail.

That seems highly unlikely to me PJ and I can't see what it would be based on. I did make me wonder if I could see a connection to Aaron in the bible and anyone else whose name they might be using in the show. I just read a quick synopsis of Aaron's life and didn't recognize any other names. Any better biblical scholar than me have any ideas?

While I have to agree it's possible, I more lean to the idea that we're going to see every possible appearance of anyone who's missing blamed on Jacob or BG. (LP went bananas during the time flashes with people trying to explain what was happening in terms of constants.)

Early on, I wrote long, detailed pieces explaining how Aaron and Walt were the next leaders and would tested like Locke and(unseen) Ben were, with the whole thing wrapped up in the Delai Lama and Panchen Lama mystic. Lately I've begun to wonder if Aaron wasn't just a prop (bad term, I know) to motivate Kate and, to a lesser degree, Jack.

I agree (since I mention before that BG was likely Claire to get Aaron to stay off island) Aaron is probabally going to be the 'one' that helps the good side win the War.

Sorry I've been missing. Had a hospital stint with a kidney stone and double softball duty (my travel team + JV high school team).

Thanks for asking, I hope none of you ever have to deal with that.

PJSander said...

Well Hammer, I am glad to hear you are okay. I had a gall bladder attack over New Years 2008 without warning (well I guess there WERE warnings, but I didn't realize they were!). The pain was worse than childbirth. I hear kidney stones are about the same, so I think you'll be forgiven for crying!

: ) P

Jim in Georgia said...

Glad you're better, Hammer. Kidney stones are on my personal list of "please don't ever."

What do they do about the one that's still in there?

8) Jim

Hammer said...

PJ, don't know anyone who had a gall bladder attack, so I'll take your word for it. I DO know several ladies that have both given birth and had kidney stones. EVERYONE of them says they would rather have given birth for every stone!

JiG, the second stone is small enough that they don't do anything...just watch and wait.

Thanks for kind word ALL!

PJSander said...

Well I will spare you too many gory details, but I had intense pain for three excruciating days before I finally went to the hospital. My gall bladder was "so far gone" that it had taken my pancreas and liver along with it. So I was drugged up and medicated while they settled the infection in the other two organs, and five days later, the gall bladder, and assorted detritus, were removed. Not my best week!

So I have watched the video clip that Doc put on the Tillie page on Facebook and have to agree that the Sawyer/Juliet final scene was more moving than the Desmond/Penny are reunited scene - but in a different way.

Man I love this show!

My wife came across a web page where Patrick Fischler announced that he would no longer be appearing in Lost. To me, this sounded like someone had made a personal decision about his future. I didn't know who Fischler was, so I had to slide over to take a peek.

Patrick Fischler is Phil, last seen with a hunk of rebar sticking out of his chest. Yeah, I'd say he won't be seen again!

I guess he was just announcing his fate. BTW, he said he wasn't going to be on Southland either...

PJSander said...

Was it Memorial Day? Wow, I guess it was - I knew it was towards the end of May. Thanks, Miss Kim!

We've been quiet. So in honor of our almost anniversary, I think maybe it is time to start a game!

The first one is a number game. Going in order - you take whatever number is next - you find something significant about that number with respect to LOST. For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42, you have to find TWO things significant (and NOT that it is one of THE numbers).

I will start.

One. There was ONE baby born on the island during our LOSTies stay there - Aaron.

Who will get TWO? (No fair READING but not responding BTW!)

: ) P

Lindsay said...

I don't know about Bible scholar, but I certainly read it a lot and study it a lot...Aaron was the brother of Moses, when God commanded Moses to lead His people out of Egypt, Moses complained that he wasn't a good speaker, so God said that his brother Aaron would speak for him. Later, when the Israelites were wandering in the desert, God gave them their Law, and the tribe of Levi, to which Moses and Aaron belonged, was named the tribe of priests. Aaron was made the first high priest.

I don't know what kind of information you're looking for on Aaron, so let me know if you want more or less or different than that. He also had a sister named Miriam.

As far as the # 2 - there were two stones found with two bodies, black and white, Adam and Eve.

Jim in Georgia said...

#3 Flight 815 broke into three major pieces.

8) Jim

PJSander said...

So far so good, guys! I guess that means I have number four and since it is one of THE numbers, I have to come up with two things.

Four people were on the list of people Michael had to bring to the Others: Kate, Sawyer, Jack and Hurley.

There were four tailies left when they were finally united with the LOSTies: Ana Lucia, Libby, Mr. Eko and Bernard.

Hi Tillies! I'm back from a weekend of camping - lots of fun!!
OK, how about this for "5": There were 5 tots on the first helo flight to the island - Frank, Charlotte, Daniel, Miles, and Naomi.

Hammer, so sorry about the stones, I understand that is a not-to-be-repeated experience. Hope the last one passes un-noticed!

Jim in Georgia said...

#6 There were six mercenaries: Keamy, Omar, Mayhew, Kocol, Lacour and Redfern.

They were all such pleasant people!

Good idea for a game, PJ. C'mon, guys, the small numbers are easier than the large ones; it's gonna get much harder. *grin*

8) Jim

PJSander said...

Welcome back from camping, Rita!

Not sure that I agree on the helicopter passengers - Naomi jumped from a previous helicopter I think. Right? She bailed and then that helo crashed?

Since Jim's already done six, I will insert a new five - there were five "greatest hits" on Charlie's list (thought of this by myself, but quoting from LP):

#5: The first time I heard myself on the radio

#4: Dad teaching me to swim at Butlins

#3: The Christmas Liam gave me the ring

#2: Woman [Nadia] outside Covent Garden calls me a hero

#1: The night I met you [Claire]

Bernard was in row nine.

Miss Kim said...

Kate was 10 years old when she stole the lunchbox/time capsule.

PJSander said...

Another one I had to look up! Shame on me...

Eleven - Daniel told Desmond that the "device" had to be oscillating at 11 hertz:
- - - - - - -
DAN: Okay, Desmond, listen. When you find me at Queens College, I need you to tell me to set the device to 2.342.

DESMOND: What?

DAN: Alright, you got it? 2.342! And it must be oscillating at eleven hertz. You got it Desmond?

DESMOND: 2.342 and oscillating at eleven...

DAN: Just remember that. 2.342 and eleven hertz, alright? And one more thing, Desmond. If the numbers don't convince me, I need you to tell me that you know about Eloise.

- - - - - - -

I think the cool thing about this game, even if we are looking things up, is that we are being reminded of things!

PJSander said...

(Sorry about the vomiting, Hammer!)

Not that it probably matters to our game, but is the Valenzetti equation considered canon? I did not participate in the ARG that year, so all that Sri Lanka stuff is LOST on me.

Okay, fourteen... 14J is the code that the phone repeated when the mercenaries had infiltrated the sonic fence. Interestingly, when I looked it up to make sure I was right, I saw that it was also the code that the DI used on the radio to signal hostile intrusion.

I suppose not really canon since it hasn't appeared on the show, but definately part of LOST in totality. :)

GRAY-HAIRED MAN: Am I? They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same.(When people are left to their own devices, they divide in struggle for power via fighting and corruption.)

BLOND MAN: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress. (Many people DO change their ways which can be seen as improvement, but eventually power(evil) gets the better of folks...so try, try again Jacob.)

Another break while I try to figure out a good number 20.

The Others are the Good Guys, or at least they claim to be; their leader answers to Jacob, maybe. Virtually our entire experience has been the Others under the leadership of Ben Linus, who was never even allowed to meet Jacob until the night he killed him (well..., maybe on that one, too). The person really leading the Others is Richard. He gave Ben the instructions (lists) he received from Jacob. Or he made them up. Richard was clearly leading the Others in 1954. He was secure enough in his position to read the riot act to young Widmore.

Richard makes two telling comments.

In WHH (the episode), when challenged by an Other (when preparing to take young Ben to the Temple) that Richard should ask permission from Ellie and that, "If Charles finds out...," a statement that didn't come with a "then," Richard responds that he does not answer to either of them.

In "Dead is Dead," when Charles Widmore begins to object to Richard's action, Richard replies that he did what he did on Jacob's orders. Had Widmore ever met Jacob?

Tentative conclusion: Richard is and always has been the leader of the others. Other people may be led to believe that they are leading, but they are not. Sawyer could take lessons from Richard Alpert.

Lindsay said...

Hammer, that conversation bothers me too, I've watched it so many times now that I have it memorized! It also bothers me that Alpert told fLocke that he is the way he is because of Jacob...good thing we have so much time to think about it before next season!

And ok, #20 - Miles said that Widmore had been looking for the island for about 20 years...
