And the Tillie goes to...

(Cue the Award show Orchestra)

In lieu of our missing new episode, tonight we begin deliberations on the nominations for the first annual Tillie Awards. (Tillie refers to TLI, the affectionate short version for the nickname The Little Island, this blog.)

There are five categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Most Improved (or Recently Compelling) Actor and MI(oRC) Actress, and Best Actor or Actress Not Currently On LOST. Nominees will be limited to those actors who have portrayed a character for a minimum of ten episodes.

When sharing your suggestions for nominees, please be prepared to site scenes which should be considered as examples of your nominee's best work.

ROFLOL. Sorry to hear it L4E.

Good job, Miss Kim!

Well I started out SO strong, but have torpedo-dropped so far in the last few weeks!

*sigh*

Good thing I don't have any MONEY on it!

Okay, so tonight's pop-ups unofficially covered a few things.

It said that Locke flashed three years into the future when he turned the FDW.

Except... that doesn't make sense. Because if he flashed three years into the FUTURE, should he not have returned on A316 within a few months to Sawyer et al and not three years later?

The pop-ups also said that the back of the statue in Lafleur WAS the 4TS.

There were a couple of other things, but I don't remember them off the top of my head.

Right, DocH, that DOES make sense. But that means that only a few weeks or months should have passed ON the island. If he jumped three years ahead, why did three years pass ON the island (to Sawyer, Juliet, etc.) before A316?

: ) P

PJSander said...

let me try again...

Do you remember back at the beginning of the season, I predicted that the LOSTies left on the island would jump around for a few days "to them" and then Jack et al would show up? THAT would have worked BEAUTIFULLY if Locke HAD jumped three years into the future (as they just said he did).

However, they jumped around for a few days "to them" and then LIVED for three years "to them."

THIS is what doesn't make sense.

I nominate Juliette for best actress. Reason, I saw a recent interview and the actress actually sounds, looks and has mannerisms that aren't even close to the character. JMO.

I know there isn't a best scene cat. but the exchange between Ben and Locke in the Orchid when Ben was preparing to blow the wall to move the island....absolutley my favorite exchange between two characters so far in the whole show.

PJSander said...

I agree with you on both counts, Hammer. Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson have had some memorable scenes together. Another very compelling one is the suicide/death scene from TLaDoJB.

As creepy as Ben is, I nominate Michael Emerson for best actor. His delivery in the dramatic scenes speaks for itself, but it is the humorous scenes which remain most memorable to me: "You know those are fifteen years old, Hugo."

As for "most improved" I think I am going to go with Josh Holloway. Sawyer's quiet affection for Juliet, particularly BEFORE we were SHOWN they were in love, was brilliant. He did more acting with his eyes than most actors do with their whole bodies. I am not one of those "ooh, Sawyer is shirtless, this is going to be a good episode" women. But I do have a new respect for Josh Holloway's craft.

I will have to think more on the other nominations.

I saw a theory on another site that said that once you travel back in time you don’t age until you catch up with yourself. I could go with that being why Richard dosn’t age and also say that Sawyer will be 35 untill 2008 when 35 year old Wawyer can take up his own life again right where he left of to go time traveling. This means that in 2008 Sawyer will be 35 years old with 65 years of life experience.
This could wxplain why Sawyer, Jack, Kate, Hurley, etc. wern’t on Jacobs list. He already had a set of them in his collection. That is why they had to go back. Because they were already there from 1977 waiting to catch up to their current selves.

What you say makes sense, DocH. Thank you.

Except...

How does the ten month jump that Ben made correlate? The remaining LOSTies didn't sit around for ten months while Ben was "high jumping" and *then* watch Locke go. To THEM, Locke left a "few days" after Ben.

PJ, I agree with your nomination of Michael Emerson as best actor on LOST, there are several scenes to quote, but I won't go into detail. Just the fact that we're still debating on whether or not he's a good guy/bad guy shows that he can play it either way and always leave you guessing!

I'm lost (haha) as to who to nominate for best actress, mainly because I don't really like any of them, they all get on my nerves. I agree with Hammer on Elizabeth Mitchell to an extent, but she still annoys me :)

Most improved...hmmm...Josh Holloway has come a long way from the annoying hick to the affectionate/caring Jim LaFleur and I would have to throw Sayid in mainly because his character seems to have become so complex lately (to me, at least).

Most improved actress, I'd go with Sun, I'm glad they're giving her a more powerful role and I think she does well at it. I'm still holding out that she's the Economist and that's why Sayid stopped working for Ben.

lost4ever said...

TY DocH, for the fantasy update. I thought it was like golf and the lowest score won.:) Oh well, Season 6 fantasy here I come. Maybe I can get the Most Improved award. Can't get any worse.:)

On another note, I am having a hard time understanding why Locke, Sawyer, Juliet, etc. HAD to spend as much time on the island as the O6 did off it. Why do they have to be equal?

Still working on my Awards but I am having a hard time because I think they are all such wonderful actors ( well minus future Walt ).

My vote for best actess: Juliet, for some of the same reasons as Hammer (I saw the interview too, I know exactly what you mean!), but also because after all this time, we still think she is hiding something - big. She has been able to maintain that aire of mystery somehow.

My vote for best actress: Ben, hands down. He's creepy, yes, but only HE could be so BAD, and have all of us actually wondering if he is actually GOOD! You have to admire his manipulation "skills" - if you could call them that!

My vote for least improved actress: Kate. Well, not that she's a BAD actress, just that her character has become sort of one-dimensional and she doesn't seem able to grow - I actually liked her better as an actress in the earlier seasons.
- 2nd place: Charlotte. Her acting didn't do much for me, her character was never engaging (for me) and her loss not all that great.

My vote for least improved actor: Jack. Same as above - no new depth.

My vote for most improved actor: Sayid. His character is growing more complex (I agree PJ!) and he is keeping up with it nicely. Like Juliet, he is able to keep an aire of great depth, to keep us thinking there is more there that he is keeping under control.

My vote for most improved actress: Sorry, there are no most improved actresses. :(

Ben: "SON OF A Bit..! It was my selfless act that propelled Locke all over the time spectrum where he accidently bumped into you and told you things I told him."

Alpert: "hmmm. Sorry about that Ben. This I did not know. Boy is my face red.... Hey. You up for another Purge?... Come on!... You know you want one... Let's see that smile..."

Now THAT'S funny! I almost wish we could see that scene!

Anonymous said...

The reason that Sawyers group had to spend 3 years on the island before being joined by Jacks party may be as simple as, they all travel back to REAL time together at some point.

Also, perhaps Locke had to die to return because he would have died in that missing 3 years. That is, the three years he didn't exist.

PJSander said...

LOL best actress Ben.

I agree about Evangeline Lilly and Matthew Fox, but honestly, I don't really think it is their fault. Season four, and so far in season five, they've had little to work with. I have never been a huge fan of Matthew Fox, don't dislike him, just don't love him.

I adore Evangeline Lilly. She is charming, sexy, adorable and very "human" in interview - never puts on airs. Plus listening to her talk makes me homesick for Canada! LOL. If I were nominating for best actress in seasons one through three, it would be Evie hands down.

Most improved actor, I think is Jorge Garcia. Again, it is all about the writing and character development. This season has given him a chance to prove himself as more than just comic relief and he has done it.

Most missed character? (Which wasn't a category!) Bet you thought I would say Charlie, didn't you? Ha! I miss Ana Lucia, just because she was SO different from all the other women. Charlie runs second, followed by Libby, but I haven't counted EITHER of those two out yet!

Most improved actress would be Yunjin Kim. Yet again, it is all about character development and writing. But the character of Sun has done the most changing, from submissive wife to take action islander to kick-butt business woman with a vengeance (and a secret?).

Best actor/actress no longer on the series, would be Dominic Monaghan, though it was a tough call between him, Michelle Rodriguez, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

So to recap

BActor: Michael Emerson
Bactress: Elizabeth Mitchell
MIoRCActor: Jorge Garcia
MIoRCActress: Yunjin Kim
BActorNLoLOST: Dominic Monaghan
MissedCharacter: AnaLucia

CM: Also, perhaps Locke had to die to return because he would have died in that missing 3 years. That is, the three years he didn't exist.
I think that is why Locke is "resurrected" ( is that the proper term? ), somehow, course -correction? Maybe, he was never meant to leave the island, maybe that is why he is alive.

Hammer said...

L4E, if so that would be explaination for why Christian was also missing from his pine box. It would also support a previous theory that he too was on the island at one time as wasn't supposed to leave and die off of it. G-pa Ray was introduced as a guy just 'waiting' to make it to 'where' he is 'supposed' to be as well?

Don't know about ole Ray being an ancient...no guyliner :)...but I like the possibility that he was on the island at some point and wasn't supposed to leave.

Anonymous said...

With all this ongoing talk about "not suppose to leave", I keep wondering WHY NOT? Why aren't people suppose to leave? I know, course correction and all that, but there is more to it with the island. If it isn't some kind of eternal prison, (that evidently requires your children and your children's children to remain with you) then what it is?

Hammer said...

Rita, I am guessing it has something to do with "the island isn't finished with you yet". Either it needs their help, or they are destined....or maybe both?

Oddly, though, I didn't think of Jennifer Tilly. My first thought is of an old friend Billie Tilley (I kid you not), and then Meg Tilly (Jennifer's sister, who could NOT be more different), whom I have met.

I agree about Evie and the no award this year. Maybe during the next break (whether a one week break or the impossibly long break between seasons five and six), we can work on retro-active Tillie awards... one set for each season.

Regarding the time before the no-bra law goes into effect: one week TOPS (pun fully intended). I would imagine it would be sooner than that, but would depend on whether or not I found my luggage with extra bras IN it. Nasty things happen to the skin next to a sweaty (let alone filthy dirty) bra. Really nasty.

I think I would probably be the leader of the no-bra reform group simply because I am more Rousseau than Shannon: comfort, convenience over couture.

But the lack of the no-bra law is just one of those many little details that have been overlooked. Put it on the list with: Jin's lack of facial hair (and recently, his new crop of curls), ANY woman's lack of body hair, (you can't tell me that Juliet had a Widmore razor in her pocket when they time jumped! LOL), Jack's "three day growth" that never changes, Claire's lack of dark roots, Sayid's unchanging beard, Sun's perfectly maintained bangs, EVERYONE having nice straight finger nails, etc.

RGS just posted something interesting on TBI:

I’m voting for Gpa being yet another red herring/filler. Add him to The Economist’s identity, (those were fun times, no?) and/or the significance of that woman Sayid fell in love with having same or similar bracelet as Naomi, and/or the last time Sayid thought with his heart.

You can also throw in the 3.2 Million request from Miles to that mix.

Shall we add to the list? Let's make a list of possible red herrings - we can have plausibly definite (PD) red herrings, and potentially possible (PP) red herrings.

For the sake of argument, if one person thinks it is a red herring it automatically goes on the PP list. If four or more people think it is a red herring, it goes on the PD list.

So far on the PP list:
Ecomonist's identity
Elsa's bracelet
The last time Sayid thought with his heart
GrandDad Ray
$3.2mm that Miles wanted
Teresa
Sawyer's toe

What else should go on there? What from that list should be a PD?

So, going on with the "No aging while in a time loop" idea, perhaps it is those in a time loop who can't have kids. If, lets say Bea Klugh was 30 in 2000 and time traveled to 1954 then she would remain 30 until 2001 where she would turn 31. Perhaps the uturis ages when the body dosn't. That is why there was a 85 year old uturis in a 30 year old women.

Dharma people didn't appear to have trouble having kids and Claire and Sun wern't in timeloops while pregnant, or before, as far as we know. I bet Juliette can't give birth now.

PJSander said...

I like where you are going with that CM. The only hiccup that I can come up with is that women with very old uteri shouldn't be able to GET pregnant and the women on the island were dying in their second trimester. If it were an infertility problem, I would say YES! No hesitation. But with this... well I think you're are on the right track.

"Oh yeah, I forgot to mention" my opinion about the Red Herring list. I love the idea of creating a list, and I think ALL the ones mentioned are great. But, I think the list should be more of questions we want answered than questions we think they won't answer. Again JMO. But either, way I think a list of some kind is good.

PJSander said...

We can do that too, L4E. I think I better add another "sheet" to the excel file that has Sawyer's nicknames in it.

Okay, so we make a list for

PPRH (possibly potential red herring)

PDRH (plausibly definite red herring)

QWWA (questions we want answered)

Anything else?

Thanks, L4E. I am not too upset about a clip show, at least there is SOMETHING. Plus, I find that often the clip shows highlight things that I didn't necessarily clue into the first time.

I checked the ABC site and didn't find any info. Of course I didn't spend very long looking because the site drives me nuts.

Where did you read / hear this?

Okay, so
episode 9 - March 18th
episode 10 - March 25th
episode 11 - April 1st
episode 12 - April 8th
episode 13 - April 15th
episode 14 - April 22nd
clip show - April 29th
episode 15 - May 6th
episode 16 & 17 (or one two hour hour finale) - May 13th.

And then EIGHT LONG months until January 2010.

Hey guys!!! I wanted to stop in and say HI!!! We just got back from vacation. So ontop of work already being crazy, I'm now playing catch up as well!!!!!!
Okay, so let me read through everything and I'll make comments. :)
I missed you guys!

Julie said...

Okay, my nominations probably wont come as any real shock but here goes: (for sake of time Im going to name characters...since Im at work)

Best Actor: Ben
This man is able to play the without a doubt creepiest man on earth! I love to hate him. :)

Best Actress: Juliet
Its almost hard for me to say that. I couldnt stand her for so long. My dislike for her was only rivaled by that of Kate. But, as an actress she has been able to make me hate her, love her, feel whats shes going through, then ultimately root for her. You all know how I feel about Sawyer (there is never a reason for him to wear clothes.. lol) but I was actually REALLY happy to see Juliet and Sawyer together.

Most Improved Actor: Gotta go with Sawyer. Again.. no surprise. He started on the show as just a pretty er... face. :) But has shown us exactly what he is capable of. Our hears bleed for him as he's tormented by the loss of his parents.. the loss of who he is (ultimately taking up an alias).. the loss of the woman he loves (Blagh, Kate)... and the loss of his freedom from the pain of that loss upon Kates return. We feel it and even though he's the 'bad boy' we want so badly for him to have something to be 'good' for. :sigh:

Most improved actress: Sun.
Im not sure its so much improved actress as improved story arch. I love the way they have built her character even though she scares me a little.

Most missed LOST cast member: Charlie. :( Oh how I miss Charlie and his little elfish qualities. LOL. When he wasn't going through drug withdrawls he was the guy you could count on to do the right thing.

***On a funny side note: The new boyfriend has asked if I only like him because of his "Lost attributes". Named Ben, and scruffy like Sawyer. LOL. I told him that it was a real possibility. :)

Hammer said...

Julie said...

Good to know... good to know. I mean, right now I feel like Im drowning. :)

So.. (and Im probably beating a dead horse) but are we thinking that the BIG statue is a 'explination' for the foot. I mean obviously the foot came from the statue, but I will want to know why its there... who put it there.. why it has four toes.. why it fell apart. Do we think that we'll every get the full story on it?

Julie said...

Commenting on old stuff:

No Bra Law- Eesh.. uhm.. depends. I mean, if you have Sawyer on the island. I'm wearing mine 24/7, jacking all the makeup I can find! With all the other hairy braless women I will be the vision of perfection! LOL!

Evie in her underwear- Yep, she's hot. I can't hate on you all for tuning in for that. I did the same with half naked Sawyer.

Okay.. back to reading old posts.

lost4ever said...
