The Substitute

What comes to mind when you read that title? My thoughts jump to Sayid and Season 5's "He's Our You." But could we also be talking about Locke as a substitute for MIB? Claire as a substitute for Rousseau?

If the idea that Season 6 is following a similar pattern to the first season, then we are due for a Locke centric episode. The "mirror" episode in Season 1 was "Walkabout."

Having LOST on Tuesdays makes the beginning of the week go quickly, but the rest of the week just drags and drags. Plus, all day Wednesday, I keep THINKING it is Thursday and I don't like feeling all confuzzled!

Yeah PJ, we were told that the first season is really all you need to watch the last season, I think it was a hint that the episodes will follow suit. So I am guessing Locke or Flocke.

Jim in Georgia said...

I had to check, but the Black Rock goes back to Season 1 (Exodus). Are C&D telling us yoy don't have to know anything about the history of the Others to appreciate Season 6? Sounds like producer speak to me. *grin*

Hammer said...

No, I think they meant 'refresher' watching. Not that I am speaking for them, but that's how I took it. I think they were hinting that S6 will have a lot of S1 rehashing with the new reality...to see the differences.

That's a good term. I wish I had participated in "the great Lost rewatch" between seasons. I watched all four seasons between four and five because they had it on SciFi, but never got around to it this time; I just watched five on disk.

Nestor Carbonell got promoted this season. We must have some more exposure to Richard coming real soon.

That is how I understood it, too, Hammer. Now that we've seen three hours of Season six, I think that rewatching Season one was so that we would notice the differences in the adjusted timeline.

On a different note: we are supposed to have 18 hours over fifteen episodes. So I think we will have a week with no LOST or just a recap episode. See if this makes sense:

2/2 - two hours
2/9 - one hour
2/16 - one hour
5/23 - two hours

that is a total of six hours and four episodes. So we have twelve episodes and twelve hours remaining, but 2/23, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16 (316!), 3/23, 3/30, 4/6, 4/13, 4/20, 4/27, 5/4, 5/11, 5/18 - which is thirteen weeks. Not a huge deal, but still...

: ) P

PJSander said...

Whoops, that should have been eighteen hours over sixteen episodes. The rest of the math, who knows?!

I also think the substitute is referring to Flocke. I imagine the Flashsideward will be about Locke and his amazingly "new" or different life. Maybe Jack will fix him? Will Helen or Cooper make an appearance? If hope these FSW's get better, which I am sure they will.

Now onto the good part of the story, IMO, the on-island happenings. Someone suggested that Flocke needs an army and Sayid may be a recruit. I like that idea. Was Claire also? Is Richard going to be? What about Kate and Sawyer and their leaving the temple? Will Flocke approach them? Not sure if Ben will follow him in the end.

Anyways, hope it better than last weeks episode "Stranger in a Strange Land" or was it "Expose", can hardly remember...

Fuuuuuny. I won't make it, since I skipped the Lions local dinner meeting to attend the premier event, I'll be going to the regular meeting. I haven't complained here yet about it, but we meet every 1st and 3rd TUESDAY. Did you hear me ABC? TUESDAY!!!

Okay...over it.

Does it look like each week they're going to have an "enhanced" version of the previous week's episode? I like those a lot even if they're not canon because it helps me have a refresher and catch things that I missed the first time.

My TV Guide shows a repeat of "What Kate Does" at 8:00 pm EST It doesn't say enhanced, but...

I wish I could take credit DocH but that is not me. I don't think they will have enhanced episodes for much longer because I think "V" is coming back to fill the 8 time slot.

Lots to process, but a GREAT episode!

Numbers... Kate wasn't on the cave ceiling list - at least not with one of the "important" numbers - at least not that I saw. I wonder which Kwon?

So ‘we’ have to go back together…everyone with the DHARMA numbers? Was that was DHARMA was doing, trying to ‘change’ one of the factors(people)? Time traveling to try to change/remove a factor to save the world? Does MIB leaving the island and go ‘home’ = him going to the real world as the fallen angel to start the apocalypse?

Was the blond-headed boy Aaron? Looks that way to me. And he told the Smoke he couldn't kill Jacob. It's against the rules!

Ben lies about having killed Jacob. What else is new? Ilana collects some of Jacobs ashes. Why was it important to carry Locke to the Survivors graveyard?

Inventory:
* Smoke and "Ford" in the cave.
* Jin and Claire unknown.
* Everyone else at or bound for the temple.

Why doesn't the Island need to be protected (per Smoke)?

I did like the way the Smoke travelled and morphed into "Locke." Was he looking for the machete?

Why was there a need for candidates?

8) Jim

PJSander said...

Was the blond-headed boy Aaron?

Could be... unless it is a random blonde headed boy just to throw us off. The boys was about ten, so if it is Aaron, either HE time traveled or everyone ELSE did, because in 2007, he was three-ish.

Out of all people in the world...why these freaks? LOL Just Kidding. I am just saying.

Also it didn't make any sense to me when he tried to explain how Jacob pushed them into making choices that brought them to the island just by touching them. So Jacob made Sawyer go kill a guy in Australia so he could get sent back on a plane that crashes there? I am REALLY confused right now how these "con artists" and "fugitives(assuming Kate was one of them)" and so on could be the candidates. Please someone explain that to me. Also what about everyone else who has been brought there. I am not complaining here. Just a little confused on how MIB explained why they were there.

Hammer said...

I yelled WALT at the TV twice...the one you spoke of and the delivery guy bringing Locke his knives...LOL

Lindsay said...

Of course, if the little boy was Aaron, I think he could just as easily be Des and Penny's son Charlie...? I mean, we don't know hardly anything about Desmond's family, so what if he is somehow related to Jacob? And that is why he was pushed to come to the island by so many people?

PJSander said...

Of course, if the little boy was Aaron, I think he could just as easily be Des and Penny's son Charlie...?

Ah yes, because the island isn't done with Desmond, yet!

Yes!!! I've been harping on the island not being done with Des. So if blonde boy is Des and Pen's Charlie...then maybe Des and Pen are A & E(harping on that too)?!

flgrl said...

Why was Ilana cool with leaving her people dead in the cave but they had to bury Locke?

Can't wait to see the screen caps of the candidates. Wonder if you only get crossed off when you die or for other reasons also.

I'm against the blonde boy as Jacob because I believe that's who he was talking about.

Good, good episode. Now I want to see one about Des.

Lindsay said...

Me too, and one about Richard!

PJSander said...

With either Aaron or Charlie, there has to be time traveling. So did Ajira crash in the future maybe? I don't think I can buy that kid as anything less than ten. Aaron was born in 2004, Charlie Hume in no earlier than 2005.

We joked about April 8, 2015 at 3:23:42pm (04-08-15, 16:23:42). If it were to be 2015, then the kid would be the right age to be Charlie or Aaron.

PJSander said...

Why was Ilana cool with leaving her people dead in the cave but they had to bury Locke?

If she's been around "a long time" (like Richard), she might know there isn't a point to burying them, but doesn't think it necessary to argue with Sun. Though, she ought to want to get to the temple ASAFP.

I am glad we won't see Smokey turn into anyone else - but that doesn't explain Sayid.

I just watched that ending again. I have another question now. Is that Jacob's cave? Or MIB's cave? Seems to me that MIB was the one keeping track of the stuff written on the ceiling. Is he lying about something?

That was really epic....

Hammer said...

Tasha, yes MIB appears to be a liar to me. I know we have debated who is good/evil. But this time MIB threw out the white rock...not both to leave it vague. I think they are pushing us to believe that MIB is the bad one.

Tasha said...

Of course I don't understand how Ben is off the island to begin with...I guess it all depends on what happened when Jughead went off.

Tasha said...

I was thinking more that...I don't think Jacob wrote those names on that ceiling. I think MIB wrote them all along, but I am wondering why and how it is all connected.

Hammer said...

Agreed Tasha, I was just using your point to push that maybe the good vs. evil debate may be coming to an end.

PJSander said...

Of course I don't understand how Ben is off the island to begin with...I guess it all depends on what happened when Jughead went off.

The detonation in 1977 would have affected MORE than just O815. Perhaps as a result of that incident, DHARMA sent all the children off the island – Ben, Ethan, Charlotte, Miles. We saw that Ethan became a doctor off island, so it makes sense that Ben would have a life in the adjusted reality, right?

I gotcha. In other words, after the bomb goes off they still end up off the island. I can buy that.

I think we may have seen the the new reality's 'Richard'. The first interviewer asked odd questions then appeared upset when he wasn't a people person. Sort of like when Richard didn't the answers he wanted from young Locke. Just throwing it out there.

Shelley said...

so locke's interviewer was also hurley's tarot/fortune teller. She's sure cleaned up!

i forgot my notes at home, but here are some thoughts i had:

claire's adoptive lady's husband ran off (last week, i know), but seeing it again tonight, i thought "DESMOND?" he's always breakin' hearts...

so where did Locke REALLY go in australia? to the magic healer that bernard took rose to? if so, he still seemed pretty bummed.

when Ilana bagged Jacob's ashes, i thought of the ash circle and all the dead folks that are potentially spread around when trying to keep Smoky out. (then i thought about all the dead people in the Dharma pit and wondered how many of them were fake dharmites like our 70s LOSTies.)

i'm starting to think more and more that the bomb going off DID affect the "current island time"...ben saying those nice things at the funeral...very unusual...(even if he DID just lie about killing Jacob).

now i know that just because we didn't see Kate's name in the cave doesn't mean it isn't there, but she's not one of The Numbers. and if Shephard refers to Christian, than i'm leaning more towards Jack and Kate being Adam and Eve in the cave.

i totally had a make-out dream with Richard lastnight.

I am not sure how they are doing this now but I was wondering about the flash sideways with Locke and not Sawyer.

Locke seems so much like Locke. It's is hard to think of him as MIB. TO me he is still Locke and I am glad that they found a way to keep him on the show even after Death because Locke is my favorite character. James saying he didn't look scared? Many times he didn't. He sure looked a little worried when he saw the boy, who in my opinion is Jacob.

So far, imo, everyone in the alt timeline has been logically placed, but how did an Australin fortune teller (Lynn Karnoff) end up as a job interviewer in Los Angeles? (There has been a previous case where one actress was cast in two unrelated roles.)

If Locke is on good terms with his father, how did he become a paraplegic?

Maybe these people were supposed to be HIS replacements and not Jacob's at all. That's why they ARE NOT on JACOB'S earlier list. These are the people MIB was recruiting. Okay, I am not sure about the last statement, but I still think MIB is the one that wrote those names in the cave and he is trying to recruit them. Shelley: so the discussion with ben and ilana at the end...."he's stuck this way"...as in smoky is stuck as locke. any guesses why?

Maybe because he took this form for longer that a few moments? Maybe there is a window that is only open for a while? I dunno.

Shelley: even when they flashed to the 70s, that was still only 3 years. 74-77 on island, 04-07 off island. so i'm not seeing a way for aaron to be half claire's age.

When the blond boy said "you can't kill him" I took it to mean he isn't allowed to kill Sawyer. Perhaps because Sawyer is a candidate.

I think the names on the wall are candidates for Jacob but while I agree that MIB may have recorded them there it is more likely Jacobs cave. Mib through out the white rock. He probably would never have had it there if the cave were his.

I think that MIB is stuck in Locke form because Locke was a candidate. If he was just anybody then MIB could change out.

I am reminded of "The Stand" in this epi. Jacob is the old black women on her porch sitting on her rocker and MIB is the devil, building his army.

Got the feeling that Sawyer will end up being a hero in the end when he realizes he dosn't want to be on MIB's side.

I don't think Sayid is recuted. I think infected and recuited are different. Perhaps one leads to another, sometimes.

I liked that until I remembered that MIB was Locke at the Barracks and at the Temple wall; then he became Alex and became Locke again. It had to have been something later, I think.

Sudden inspiration: Could it have something to do with burning nthe cabin? It "has to be" something Ilana was conected to.

i was loving this! until i confirmed via LOSTpedia that ajira DID crash in 2007. that's why sawyer and his bunch went from 74-77, 3 years, while the off-islanders went from 04-07. and the episode with all the '77 action repeatedly said "30 years later" when it would cut to the ajira scenes.

It was fun while it lasted! LOL

that Kid is driving me nuts. Flocke seemed surprised that Sawyer saw him too. and he was obviously someone that Flocke recognized, that's what makes me think it was Jacob.
"you know the rules...you can't kill him." We assume that Smoky's loophole worked since someone else did his dirty work, but i'm guessing that's still a rule-breaker. The rules must be that those 2 can't die; fits in well with the Moon Pool idea. I like that; that they are being punished for pride.
Maybe the boy was just an apparition to remind Flocke of his guilt/"blood on his hands", and that might be why he's surprised that Sawyer could see him. Even then...why chase him...so we could see all that LockeLeggery i guess? I didn't catch that; I've still only seen this one once.

PJSander said...

Okay, so the loophole regarding killing Jacob sort of relates to the rules about Widmore and Ben and killing, right? But how?

Ben and Widmore can't kill each other? Shouldn't have been able to have offspring killed, but could?

Jacob and MIB can't kill each other, but MIB found the loophole. Is the fact that it was BEN significant?

Could the MIB be a Widmore? I feel like it is significant that we do NOT know his name.

I'm leaning toward the cave being MIB's as well. Although, the first time we both of them...they were together and Jacob didn't need any ash, I don't think ash was ever for Jacob. In fact, MIB didn't even kill Jacob (loophole). The ash seems to be to protect 'mortals' (for lack of a better term).

I agree that the cave may be part of the tunnel system to get back to the temple.

Well perhaps if he was talking about Sawyer...maybe Sawyer is someone important's offspring? I mean, we know his parents died, but what if there was some island connection that we didn't know about? Or maybe he was like Aaron and ended up being adopted and they weren't even his real parents...?

Eh...I think LP is wrong. But it correct, I am certain it wasn't the medusa as it didn't look anything like the one the ones that bit Nikki.

agree that it was a spider, but it looked too furry to be a medusa spider. plus they made a point to say that locke was "getting ripe."

the tunnels leading to the cave makes sense; the names were scrawled in a back room anyway. i like that about the "no wind" too.

Hmmm. I guess I don't know a lot about it, but I would have thought that the embalming process, which would have taken place before the funeral (remember way back in Season 3), should have taken care of a bad smell? Or maybe not. I don't know.

DocH: Then, why 'demonstratively' show us a creepy-crawly (with 14 shows left), when they've only ever shown us a creepy-crawly once before? And both of those shows were connected to sand burials at the beachcamp. (toe-tapper!)

Good point. I don't remember the medusa spider looking so fuzzy, but you know I have said all along that Nikki and Paulo were NOT a mistake and that there would be a point to their story so I would not mind if that the spider comes back and bites us (bad pun, I know).

I really don't think it was a crab, no matter what LP says!

Finally caught up with all of your excellent thoughts and ideas.

1. IMO the boy is Aaron, just not sure how although we know time-travel is possible. The wheel still exists right?

2. I do believe they are all in the Airja 2007 timeline on the island. We were never shown a flash from the Airja survivors perspective since they have been on the island.

3. I am leaning toward the cave being MIB's. I like the tunnel ideas also and Doch's point about showing us the cheesy climbing down the ladder scene. Not sure what to make of him throwing the stone though. Was it representing him wanting to escape the island or was it because he found the loophole and killed Jacob? The latter makes more sense. I also was thinking the same thing as Rita, that MIB too needs a candidate.

lost4ever said...

I am also confused on the whole MIB shape-shifting. Maybe it is because Jacob is now dead. I am sure they will address this later but I thought that scene was lame.

BEN: Why did you have to bring him to the statue in the first place?

ILANA: Because the people there need to see the face of what they're up against.

BEN: And whats to stop what they're up against from changing his face?

ILANA: He can't; not anymore. Hes stuck this way.

That's it? C'mon Ben. A little help here for the viewers like a WHY?

lost4ever said...

Hmm... The critter may be a spider, but it definitely is not a medusa, as represented in "Expose." There are two, btw, one on Locke's upper right arm and one on his head by his ear. You gotta look fast. My guess is that they're there to provide motion to an otherwise dead scene.

In Jughead times, we saw a whole statue.

Did we? I know we saw it in the same episode, but I thought that was a different time flash?

One obvious continuity error -- for the island to hide its' 2000 foot mountain peaks, it would have to sink to 2001 feet. TFTS was at (originally) sea level. That means it would now be at 2000 feet below the surface - meaning - no coral reef, plush wildlife, or light for that matter.

Good call on that one!

The Swan electro-magnetic force was responsible for the "Snowglobe" around the island. Once they broke the cover on the snowglobe, it sank, and they are transported to WHENever the are now.

++ If the island has sunk more than once, maybe the statue snapped on one of the early submergings.

Excellent idea DocH. As I read somewhere else, maybe that's how the Black Rock ended up in the middle of it.

Is it possible that MIB's cave, or anywhere else on the island for that matter, could lead to an underwater habitat for when the island is submerged?

Follow-up question. If MIB has been faux-Christian since the very first episode, are those snazzy white tennis sneakers associated with someone MIB inhabited before Christian?

the white shoes were jack's; he felt his father didn't need to be buried in new shoes.

he was also wearing them when he "visited jack" in the hospital.
so if THAT was MIB too, was MIB also libby that michael saw? and if so, whatup with MIB being able to get off the island.

So if that was him and he can already get off the island, why is he making a big deal about leaving the island and going home, whatever that means? I think it's a set up, I don't think he intends to leave really, I think he intends to use Sawyer as his replacement so he can go back to whatever his true form is and finally be free.

I think that it was him in the cabin that said "help me" to Locke...perhaps Jacob made him that way? Perhaps that's why the MIB asked Jacob if he "has any idea how badly I want to kill you right now?", not sure where I'm going with this, just thinking it through...

Others have mentioned that they feel Nestor C's acting was a bit off this last episode or 2 - I see it differently. I see a man who was completely in control up until now, but now is SCARED - TERRIFIED. He knows what Flock is, even if we don't. He knows much more and is REALLY SCARED. Being so scared makes him appear weak or something else maybe, but he is a man who is desperate to get back to the temple, and to bring the candidates with him.

So far the Nemesis has appeared as:
*Christian Shephard
*Alex Rousseau/Linus
*John Locke

(I still have trouble including the spider(s) as an appearance.)

These are people who were dead on the Island (including Hydra), but were not buried. Two of them were in boxes (coffins). We don't know what happened to Alex. Did Ben carry her into his house? That's a kind of a box.

Still trying to figure out how Ilana is so sure of herself, of course.

Did Helen or Locke throw away Jack's business card or just tear it into four neat pieces?

Tarzan can text?

PJSander said...

I agree with the NestorC analysis completely. Alpert has always been stoic and cool, this is a departure, and IMO, convincing.

Did Helen or Locke throw away Jack's business card or just tear it into four neat pieces?

I wondered the same thing. We never saw the disposal!

Regarding MIB and bodies. We believe he has appeared as Yemi, Alex, Christian - none of whom were buried. Presumably Libby and Ana-Lucia were buried. Charlie was not. Michael was not. That line that was something like "the dead don't stay buried" is seeming even more important. I looked on LP and couldn't find that reference, but I did see that Yemi's body was missing from the plane at some point. Which got me thinking...

If MIB took the form of Christian, Yemi and Alex, maybe it was because no one disposed of their bodies. MAYBE, he is stuck as Locke because his body was found?

: ) P

Circus Mom said...

I beleive Ben stayed behind to "bury his daughter" when they left the barracks. I will have to rewatch. If he did say it we certainly didn't see him do it.

I think it is possible that MIB can only take on the form of a candidate, however, I am not that certain. Why did richard want Pauls body when Sawyer burried the two dead hostels.

lost4ever said...

I too agree with the acting done by Carbonell and I think we are seeing the best from ALL of them this year, that is until Malcolm David Kelley comes back.

Richard may be scared but he also seems out of Jacob's loop when it comes to some of the knowledge.

Regarding MIB and bodies. We believe he has appeared as Yemi, Alex, Christian

I thought we saw smokey turn into Alex when Ben went to be "judged"?
I do agree with CS and Yemi though, but didn't Yemi appear when Eko was being "judged" and then battered?

lost4ever said...

Helen tore it up in 4 pieces after telling Locke he was her miracle. I wonder if her destiny has changed now and she won't die when she did.

lost4ever said...

Maybe to ensure that MIB couldn't take his form? Ilana knows but the how and why but Ben didn't. That damn Linus.:)

Anonymous said...

When the boy first appeared Richard couldn't see him but Flock could. Flock said "You can't see him?"

Then the boy appeared to Flock again and Sawyer said "Who the hell is that." and Flock says, "You can see him?" and Sawyer says "Hell yah."

Sawyer could also see Kate's horse. Nobody else seems to see other peoples apparations. I think this is significant but I['m not sure why.

Circus Mom said...

So, if the 2007 we are seeing is the new timeline and they were brought to the island again as a course correction, perhaps their 1977 conciousness was transported into the new 2007 timeline. That version of Sayid died and then his new timeline self came back alive. Or not. My head is spinning. I want to watch 12 monkeys tonight and refresh my way of thinking.

Havn't read all TBI but Londonboy mentioned that the numbers seem to be counting down rather than up. I kinda like that.

I can't understand why anyone isn't liking this season. There is so much hidden in each epi. Some of it is hidden in plain sight.
