316

This week's episode is entitled 316. Based on the podcast, it sounds as if it (or perhaps next week's) is a "stand-alone" in that it does not affect the story-telling. I expect it will be a particularly strong program because the "stand-alone" episodes are those the producers usually offer up for Emmy consideration.

316 - The area code in Wichita, Kansas
(The producers have made Oz references.)

316 - The year the Jin Dynasty in China collapses
(Character named Jin.)

316 - The year that Constantine I issues an edict prohibiting the punishment of slaves (by crucifixion and facial branding) and Constantine II is born
(Possible connection to our four-toed statue.)

316 - The name of an instrumental Van Halen song from the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
(No connection that I can think of, but interesting.)

John 3:16 - Perhaps the most likely reference and perhaps most famous bible quote: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Thoughts?

LOL.

I got a giggle out of it, but hope you know it was in good fun, Hammer!

It's expression from my earlier envrionment, not experience. :)

And yes, I know it's for funzies. I'm STILL going to use my 'signature' expression. LOL

Hammer said...

I'm guessing the last option of 3:16. Locke's 'sacrifice' to save the world....plus it's the obvious one.

PJSander said...

I agree Hammer. Of course, it could just be the street number of Jack's house! (We know it isn't Kate's!)

YES! It's Wednesday! I agree with you both that the 316 is most likely related to the Bible verse, even if it DOES also turn out to be someone's address (lots of multiple meaning all the time).

tvguide.com has a poll that says American Idol will be on at the same time as LOST starting March 11 (when AI will get down to business) - they want to know which show people will be watching, and it is LOST hands down! (duh!) Just thought that was interesting.

PJSander said...

Where's the poll, Rita? We should post it on TBI so that other LOSTaholics can vote too!

Anonymous said...

The poll is at http://www.tvguide.com/News/Idol-Lost-Wednesday-1002979.aspx

you can enter your comments and just see how LOST RULES!!
There are a whole lot of us out there!

I will post this on TBI also.

PJSander said...

Thanks, Rita. I added my 2¢ to the comments, but if there is a true poll, with percentages, I didn’t find it. I didn’t read ALL the comments, but the overwhelming majority are LOST fans. That may be more to do with LOST fans trolling the internet on Wednesdays than anything else! LOL

Doc Jenson seems to have found something relevant to 316.

NOT A SPOILER.

"And if you go to your local bookstore today and buy HarperCollins' 2001 single-volume compendium of all seven Narnia novels, you know what you'll find on page 316? That's right: The dedication page to Prince Caspian. Go ahead. Take a look."

PJSander said...

HUH?

Okay, so I don't have that edition, but I did look at the dedication page of Prince Caspian: To Mary Clare Havard.

In researching who Mary Clare was (her father was doctor to Lewis, as well as a member of a club of writers, the Inklings), I cam across another piece of information. The TRUE title of Prince Caspian SHOULD include a subtitle: Return to Narnia.

Lewis' step-son, Douglas Gresham explained that "returned" in this case means more than just the four children going back to Narnia: "A theme of return became a key part of the story. [Lewis] didn't look at a return in [merely] the obvious physical sense, but went deeper to consider a restoration, a restoration of those things that are true-- true life, true leadership and mostly, true faith. Prince Caspian tackles that idea, and broader themes of battle between good and evil, spiritual obedience and discernment, and ultimately joy-- a festive joy when what was wrong has been put right again."

Perhaps also interesting is that the first chapter of that novel is called "The Island."

I can proudly say that I have never watched an episode of American Idol so I know which show I will be voting for. Thanks Rita. Not sure if LOST will beat out American Idol in viewership though.

I like the other connections you presented about 316, PJ. Especially Constantine and the four toes, seeing as I kind of have only 4 toes on both feet.

I also found a lot of info on Airja Airways on darkufo.blogspot.com while I was trying to find my fantasy league scores. But not much more than lostpedia had.

You take a ribbing extremely well Hammer.:)

Kind of weird how their are currently 4 folks from the chopper with Ms. Hawking right now....4 children that have to return to Narnia(Island)??

Does anyone know if Guam is near one of the 12 vile vortices? Maybe that is the one they will enter to get back to the island and land on the small island runway?

I think DocH has it. I think that the Ajira Airways website said that flight 316 left from LA to Guam.

Hammer said: Theory is not dead yet. It depends on when the work was being done compared to when Char was on the island.......

True. It they show up much earlier in the 70's, then that theory could hold.

Of course, I think that Charlotte had to die in the last episode because they were flashing to a time when little Charlotte was on the island. Which means I think the O6 et al just crashed on the island in a time BEFORE young Ben and his dad arrived.

I am sure that theory will be shot down on the big island by the time I hit send here and return there!

Or better yet, maybe he was right and he CAN'T go back, maybe he died or better still, he's still on the plane. There wasn't a crash, maybe they just transfered to the island by going thru the window.

LOVED when she said 'probably not' in response to Jack asking her if Ben was telling the truth...classic...

also, loved when Ben said 'i'm reading because my mother taught me how' to Jack on the plane...;)

got chills when they finally showed what Locke had written in the letter to Jack..."i wish you would have believed me."

and just what in the heck did Kate do to/with Aaron? and wasn't yhe part of the O6? shouldn't he have been brought back also?

On TBI, someone pointed out that in the bible, Jacob was the great-great grandfather of Aaron.

I have an oops that I need to verify. I thought I heard Jack tell Ben that he found Locke's letter in his pocket. But Hawking gave it to him. Was he lying to Ben or plot flaw?

PJSander said...

Hammer,

Mrs. Hawking gave Jack the suicide note that Locke wrote. Then, at the butcher shop, Jack tucked the note into Locke's jacket. Then the airport screeners found the note, ostensibly when they were checking the body for weapons or whatever. Then the flight attendant gave the envelope back to Jack.

HTH,

I think Ajira 316 did crash (water bottles at beach) and that the returning Losties were pulled into the "time" zone they were needed. The Island needed the three we saw, back with Jin, in the Dharma Days.
I like the way you are going with that but wouldn't Sun go to the same time. Unless, that is there needs to be more of a dramatic build up before there reunion.

You mean some one else said it? Before I went to bed last night it was 4 times. I woke up today and almost posted "I wonder what book Ben was reading on the plane?" I decided against it as there is enough drivel on there already.

I know I have only been on there for 2 weeks this year, but I am already not following all the rules. READ ALL POSTS. I am finding myself skipping certain names. Not because of their insight, because they ask questions that have already been asked once or twice. How many times do we need to hear "What happened to Aaron? Just venting.:)

i'm not sure how i feel about that...i wanna say that Ray is important and there is something there...but it could just be that the scene was to show us how Jack got something of his dad's to put with Locke...very interested in what all of you think...

Last season, the biggest foul seemed to be people asking questions that had already been asked and answered.

THIS season, it seems as if it is the people who read a question and jump to answer it before reading to see if it has been answered once (or twice, or seven times) before.

I wish there were a way of inviting select people over here to post (Jaime, Toeknee, most recently Tasha come to mind) so we don't have to slog through the drivel to find the diamonds on TBI.

I mentioned that earlier - not sure if it was here or TBI. I don't think we saw the whole retirement community scene JUST because of the shoes. IMO, that is a lot of extra $ for production (when they could have filmed Foxy looking through a box in his own bedroom) especially with extras, locations, and several actors with speaking roles.

also, anyone else think it was funny that Ray really didn't look any older than Christian...very similar to Locke and Anthony Cooper...?

He is definitely older. I would put Jack at mid to late 30's, Christian at mid to late 50's and Ray at mid to late 70's. I think Christian's just a bit more "worn" than Ray.

FWIW, according to LP, the casting call for the part of granddad said, "Ray was named "Hal", and described as "70s, Caucasian. Successful, handsome and charming rogue with a twinkle in his eye. A guy who can still fight the establishment and win."

The actor's name is Raymond J. Barry, so that might be why they called him that.

Incidentally, everyone is assuming, and perhaps rightly so, that Ray is Christian's father. We haven't actually been TOLD this, and he COULD be Margo's father. Ray's ONLY mention of either of Jack's parents was:

RAY: No. Those [shoes] were your father's. Your mom sent me a box of his stuff after he died. Must've got mixed in when I packed for a quick getaway.

It is POSSIBLE that Margo sent some of Christian's things to Ray because he could get some USE out of them, not just for sentimental reasons. (I mean, it isn't as if SHOES are sentimental!) Were this the case, I think it is safe to say that Margo COULD be Ray's daughter. Which may also account for the less significant age difference.

Still, it makes more sense that Ray is Christian's father.

: ) P

ESB said...

those are all excellent points PJ, and logical and while i still think that Ray looked just little young to be Jacks grandad, it doesn't bother me too much because my gramma didn't look that much older than my mom when my mom passed and Christians hard living definitely would've aged him...

The fact that Desmond did not look at all surprised to see this "stranger" at the church with Sun and Jack, makes me wonder if a) they have a prior relationship I have forgotten, b) they have a prior relationship we don't know about or c) that was just an whoopsie from the writers' room.

Sayid: Extra Hair Gel and a copy of Gentle Torturing for Dummies. Hell, I’m handcuffed to the hottest Marshall in History…What Me Worry?

Kate (Freckles): A set of Wife Beaters that say: A Smoke Monster Ate My Baby… and a box of Camouflaged condoms.

Sun: Seeds for my Tropical Garden that include Cannibus and crazy glue for Jin’s ring to stay put this time. Baby photos so I can have a good cry near Emmy Awards time.

Doc Jack: Hmmm…Medical Supplies? Jack Daniels? No, I think I’ll take my buddy John in a casket…but nothing that could help me SURVIVE on a remote Island that might have a few dangerous people there trying to kill me. It’s a Tropical island…why would I need a Hat, fer Christ’s sake when I got a shiny blue suit?

Ben: A copy of Lord of the Flies and a big bottle of Arnica.

Hurley: A guitar case full of Ho Hos and Doritos. Bonus Points: They float better than I do!
I’ll leave behind my mirror because I don’t care that my hair looks like it got sent to me thru a time warp from the original Woodstock.

Desmond; ooops…Dezzy had a hissy fit and walked out…wanna bet he’s hog tied and packed into the area of the plane set aside for Pets? Probably knocked him out with a Scottish golf club or maybe force fed a few bottles of Monastery Wine.

And I also bet; One of those passengers in the rear is someone they really won’t want to get onto the island. Someone working for Widmore.

While you bring up good points about Ray maybe being Margo's father, in the end, I think you are right. He is Christian's father. I was surprised he didn't mention the watch, though. The one Jack got from CS in the mobisode. That would have been a nice little tie-in.

Thanks Hammer for having my back! Bobo deleted most of the comment though, and it was actually Tasha who said "That or she killed Aaron, crazy woman", not me. Hard to believe he is getting a following over there.

PJ, I was thinking about Circus Mom's suggestion that you invite people here by gmail invite. At first I thought this would be a nice idea - but the more I thought about it, the riskier it seems. Here's why:
You never know how people will take things. Someone COULD be offended that there is a "private blog" - they might go back to TBI and tell everyone what "snobs" we all are, etc., as well as how to get here, and they would ALL come.
Also:
I went back through the early threads here and there are some names we haven't seen here in awhile, as well as some annonymous posters who very well could still be coming and just not posting. This site might not be all that private after all.
What I'm trying to say is that we have a GREAT thing here and I would be very sad to see it messed up. I LOVE spending time with all of you here. :)
Do what you think is best, of course, just throwing out some thoughts. The little island is special!

I agree. We'll just leave it as it is. Thanks, all!

I’m gonna pull the dead horse from the TPID thread. I just watched Deja Vu, the movie about an ATF agent that time travels to stop the murder of a women and terrorist bombing of a ferry. She dies the first time around, he goes back in time, creating two of himself. The ‘new’ him in the past dies saving her, and the original ‘him’ goes on living in the same time frame as when the second him dies and that’s how he was able to actually change the past/future. So that’s the cop out, the second him dies to change the rules. The first time around he gets a phone call from the coroner “You got to see this.” and it’s the girl, what is assumed (they didn’t show it, but the scientist that sends him to the future aludes to it) the second time around he gets a call from the coroner, it’s the second him.

If D&C are going to use this…my theory goes up in smoke. LOL. But, my theory that Dan already was in the 70’s to create his book is still alive, but now he travels back again, creating two of himself, sacrificing one of himself to change the rules….

Repeating my post which belongs right before Hammers:

Oh golly, Hammer, I hope not. I can't say for SURE, but I seem to remember D&C promising that they weren't going to have multiple Marty McFly guys running around. Course, then again, they also very EARLY on said that LOST was not about time-travel. At the TIME, it was true. But I DO know that they have repeatedly said this is NOT Back to the Future time traveling.

: ) P

Hammer said...

I'm not really sure what they meant. I took it as there won't be a bunch of multiple futures for fans to keep track of.

lost4ever said...

LOL.
I just posted what you said on TBI Hammer in response to the BACK TO THE FUTURE statement, as well as responding to your post. Should have checked here first.

I was re-watching the DWY special access videos. I have a really good feeling about my theory about the runway on the small island...well at least that it won't be an irrelevant scene anyway. :)

Hammer said...

L4E, I thought it was a good movie until the end. They were pushing the 'can't change things' rule and using evidence the whole time....then bang....he travels, sacrifices himself, changes only the MAJOR things, all the little stuff is the same....and he's STILL alive....didn't like the end.

Hammer said...

Ironic part….she ends up living this time around (opposite of Rousseau) and obviously remembers the man telling her that he’s from the future to savesher….but the original him meets her afterward and doesn’t remember doing all that stuff because it was a ’second’ him doing it and that version of him died.

I thought it was a decent movie also, Hammer. I enjoy Denzel Washington movies, but like you, I did not like the end. It was on again today.

Finaly caught up on TBI. Feel like we are skiping through time. Read posts 388 and 410 over there and you might get a nosebleed.

Have some theories but need to digest 450 comments before posting.

lost4ever said...

LOL...410 and 388, CM. I responded to Duke's original post ( 370 ) before getting to Hammer's reply of Skweez's post. My mistake.

I know the rules say "if something has been said there is no need to say it again". But I am glad I did. Hawking IS Faraday's mother. While alot of unanswered questions remain, we need to accept the answers to questions when we are given them. Who is Faraday's mother was an answered question. Nip that in the bud before there are 50 more posts on the weird reaction from Hawking. JMO.

Yes, the rules say that, but when one person asks a question that has already been asked and answered several times, it is REALLY hard to ignore it, isn't it? Like my post 376.

Very hard PJ, and very frustrating sometimes.

I agree, sometimes you have to keep answering the same questions or some of the less addicted posters will beleive something that we know to be incorrect and there will be 200 posts discussing the theory based on the false info.

I am wondering why Hurley was yelling for help when he was in the lagoon. He was a very good swimmer in Looking Glass after he did his belly flop.

So I have been thinking about Aaron and where Kate may have left him. Does the idea that she tracked down Desmond and left him Aaron with him, Penny and baby Charlie make any sense?

See I think she wants to follow the dream she had when Claire said not to bring Aaron back. So she gives him to Desmond, who knows the truth about Aaron's heritage, and whom she assumes will never return to the island.

Only, Desmond, the boat, Penny, baby Charlie and Aaron DO return to the island... too far fetched?

: ) P

Hammer said...

Not too far fetched. I saw a tv guide interview where the theory is...Claire didn't mean Aaron when talking to Kate...she meant Locke.

And when Hugo said you aren't supposed to raise him to Jack...he meant 'raise'(reincarnation) Locke.

If that's true....big monkey wrench.

ESB said...

i don't think that's too far fetched either PJ...interesting theory...

the obvious choice to me is that Kate gave Aaron to Claire's mom...but that doesn't really explain the way that Kate acted afterwards...unless she's just extremely upset that she gave him up (understandable) and is in serious grief...

i don't really buy all the Kate is 'dead/a zombie' ideas floating around on TBI but who knows...i DO think that Aaron is going to end up on the island soon tho...maybe all the kiddos will (Aaron Ji Yeon, Charlie, etc..)...i mean, what better way to manipulate the parents, right?

i guess the problem is, who brings them? we no longer have a clear cut idea of who the 'bad guys' are...Abaddon? Alpert? Ben? Widmore? sheesh...

i'm going to try to watch last weeks episode today on my lunch break...i'll post after if i have anything remotely worth saying...;)

This looks kind of interesting... and it includes your globe, plot point thing, DocH:

http://tinyurl.com/lamppostmaps

I haven't read the comments, yet, but I was particularly impressed by the fact that the coordinates are all CLOSE to (Latitude 4.815, Longitude 162.342) as shown by the yellow marker in the bottom map.

I went to the site you listed PJ, and read all the comments. Some pretty interesting stuff, that's for sure!
DocH, I find that the big globe from that site and your "waiting room" makes a really cool wallpaper for my computer! Now to see if my husband goes for it - he's not much of a LOST fan, though he knows the "rules" for LOST night. :)

Someone on that site, PJ, mentioned that the coordinates from the lamppost station plot out to look like the swan from the dharma swan station logo. It really does look like it, though I have no clue what that means! Still, lots of interesting things to think about there. Thanks for passing it along.

Yeah, no Fringe tonight - and not for EIGHT weeks if I remember correctly. Or maybe not for four weeks and then they come back for eight weeks. Anyway, it is way too long.

Yikes! I wasn't trying to add to the questionable fodder on TBI by commenting on Kate! I posted so that I wouldn't look suspicious posting in a month when we're doin' the April Fool's Day thing.

Love your map DocH. I've been trying to use the Becker-Hagens planetary grid map to make heads and tails of Sanderson's vile vortices and "the numbers"....the pattern of the grid is interesting and reminds me of a Dharma logo. It's pretty interesting.....
tinyurl.com/earthsgrids
You need to scroll down a bit to find the Becker-Hagens grid....but the other grids are cool too.
