The Variable

The Variable, Season five's fourteenth episode marks a huge milestone for LOST. It is the program's ONE HUNDREDTH EPISODE!

Two of the show's executive producers, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, promise that it is a companion episode to arguably the best episode of season four, "The Constant."

It would seem that VARIABLE is a play on the word CONSTANT in that both are mathematical terms. From Wikipedia: Varying, in the context of mathematical variables, doesn't mean change, but rather, dependence on the values of other variables in the expression in which the variable occurs, or dependence of the value of the expression on that of the variable.

What will this mean to the LOSTies stuck in 1977? Will Daniel's return mean that we will finally find out if and how the characters go back to the "present" time? Will Jin and Sun ever be reunited? What is Smokey? Who is Jacob? Will Desmond return to the island? Will he bring Penny and baby Charlie? Where is Claire? Is Juliet an Other or an other Other? How old is Alpert? What is in Hurley's guitar case? What about Walt? Aaron? Ji-Yeon? How did Pierre Chang lose his arm? Why does he go by so many different names? How is it that Ben can take a lickin' and keep on tickin' OVER and OVER again? How are Widmore and Mrs. Hawking related? How will Paik fit into the story? Will we see the face of the four-toed statue? What do the hieroglyphics under the temple mean? For whom do Ilana and Bram work? Why those numbers?

Add the questions YOU want answered in the comments section.

Well PJ, I want all those things answered and then some!
* where are Rose and Bernard?
* who are Adam and Eve?
* Where is Sayeed?
* Where was Faraday?
* Why does it take so long for a new episode to get here??!!

Thanks for the update, DocH. Not sure I can recover from THIS! LOL.

FINALLY!! Less than 24 hours to go! I want to know if Faraday and Hawking are really related and why she left the island. The Constant was such a great episode last season, I hope this one lives up to it!

I really want the Jacob character revealed by the end of the season. I would also like to see what happened to young Ben after he was carried into the temple. Another would be GMTA's new blogname.

Back on the road so I won't have much time, like CM. But I should be able to enjoy the episode tomorrow with you all. Can't believe the season is almost over already.

I am also guessing we will see the opening scene from the Season premier again.

So today is Obama's 100th day and Lost's 100th episode. I think it's a clue! LOL j/k

Well I gonna guess that Dan is The Variable. His actions that he learned in the past three years on how to change WHH makes him the variable.

Desmond is the variable. That's why he needed a constant to exist.

Here is some fun reading on variables.

Hammer said...

CM...first of all we need to know your locations and dates for your circus....2nd, I think Des was main idea for the title of The Constant...I think so because of Dan's notebook.

Funny stuff Doc...funny stuff. :)

Rita said...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Daniel is the variable as Desmond is the constant. Not much of a reason, I know, but there it is. I think that whatever happened during his off island jaunt will be the clue to the variable. Hopefully, we learn about that tonight!

In fact, I have VERY high hopes for tonight, being the 100th ep and all! I can't wait! Yea, it's LOSTday!!!!

Hammer said...

Copy cat!!!! JK Rita...:)

Jim in Georgia said...

Are these things in a string?

Penny is a constant for the variable Desmond. Desmond is a constant for the variable Daniel. Daniel is the constant for the variable....

GMTA Give Me The Answers??

Hi, all--so glad to be back on an Island--have been busy so haven't looked in for a while--hope all is well with everyone!

Well, I am very excited, and nervous, and...holy smoke monster, 100 episodes!!!

""it says Very Able - not - Variable." LOL, nice!

In addition to all the good stuff everyone's put out there as far as what they want to know, I want relationship deets--yes, I am still interested in the various love connections on the island. Are Sawyer & Jules going to stay strong, or be overset by that Kate Factor? I want to know what is up btw Ben and Widmore--Who IS the greater evil, or is Smokey a trump for them both?

And Jack, is he going to pick up the leadership mantle he threw down with such whining abandon? And will he do the right thing, or, even be able to figure out what that right thing is?

AND, what about the now mysterious Locke? Dead, alive,Jacob's mouthpiece?

Oh, yeah! I'm ready!

OTOH, am I going to be happy with the answers we get?

I might be doing some whining of my own later!!!!

Best, Liz

This could be totally off, but I always thought GMTA had something to do with Greenwich Mean Time, since Leah is from across the pond.

I really like your idea Jim, about the constant/variable thing being a string. Maybe that is the key to why everyone is important - in some way or another, they act as a constant/variable that is necessary for whatever outcome is 'supposed to' or 'should' happen.

PJSander said...

GMTA was Great Minds Think Alike. Once, about a year ago, Leah and I posted something similar almost simultaneously. I told her GMTA and she adopted that as part of her blog ID.

We Tillies (who have been around since the beginning) were witnesses to the quite horrific flaming arrows she hurled at another poster here a while ago. Her comments were deleted and she was asked to stop with the nastiness and when she did not, she was asked to leave.

Since then, she appears from time to time on TBI, and there has been supposition that she took on the role of "Jayne" to talk to Tarzan on TBI.

In an effort to keep TLI safe and sane, we try to refrain from discussing the characters on TBI, especially in a negative way. Occasionally, Duke and Bobola get the better of us, but by the most part, we try to keep TLI reserved for sweetness and light *bg*.

Rita said...

A year or two ago, someone used the expression GMTA, to refer to something they had said that someone else had said - I don't remember who now - meaning great minds think alike. Leah was just Leah at that time. She said she liked the GMTA and said "from now on, my name will be GMTA Leah". That's how I remember it.

Did she get the need to return wrong? Why?

Why did Daniel expect her to help some other way?

Oh man. I just finished watching over here on the west coast. Tragically great ending. I'm a big Dan fan, and that ending really tugged at my heartstrings.

I actually thought that Eloise showed a softer side to her tonight. Yes, she is pushy and sends her son to die on the island. But it is clear that the reason why she is so overbearing is because she is pushing him to be able to change something and be successful. Unfortunately, she can't tell him any of that because he wouldn't understand and I'd probably mess it all up. You could tell that she was being eaten up by guilt the entire episode. Great episode, and superb acting by the woman who plays Eloise!

PJSander said...

Here is my post on TBI (some of which was already posted here):

I think Daniel has to survive, at least long enough to make the comic-con video.

I think Daniel doesn't stop the drilling and that the release of energy will be the flash (or purple sky event) that returns our LOSTies to their "present" time. Sawyer and Juliet will disappear out of thin air just before they are DHARMAnated.

Here's something that is niggling at me. Sun left Ji-Yeon at home with her mother. Both Claire and Kate have left Aaron. Penny left lilCharlie with a nurse. Michael left Walt. Maybe Hawking plays the Pied Piper and gathers up all these "abandoned children" and brings them to the island?

My head is swimming.

: ) P

Hammer said...

My only thought is on Dan making the video is that it seems possible that in his studies he may have TT several times and the video was from a different visit to the 70s. IF he actually already died.

Hammer said...

Locke has gotten LOST in all of this. How is it that since season 1, he has 'known' that the island is his destiny and he is supposed to be there (ala Hawking) but only 'knows' this by instinct. Hawking really knows what is going on...Locke just senses it...what up?

OK, so either Widmore had a son with his sister, or I was wrong. It does seem as though Penny and Daniel are step siblings. I now want to know, more than ever, who Penny's mother is.

Our circus, Fern Street Circus, performs primarly in San Diego for two weeks at the end of May. I can share video of the show in June. We'll have to figure out how. If you search Youtube for Fern STreet Circus you will find a lot of our Jr. performers and training videos. Add Feelin' Good and you will get ritacircus chiffon act. My son is the young man who hands her the blue chiffon. She is a performer from Mexica and has several videos in her group.

That's a heck of a body count.

Are people going to die off by class? Of the known "children of the Island," Charlotte is dead, Daniel is...something, and Miles better start looking over his shoulder.

I'm with others who thing that the world will be a better place when Radzinsky puts a check mark next to his own name unless, of course, Kelvin Inman, who lies well, did it. If I were stuck in the Swan with Radzinsky, I'd be tempted.

Over at the LP, someone has pointed out that Widmore made very good time from London to Los Angeles between his phone call from Ben and his arrival at the hospital in the role as estranged father times two. Well KtheG, if Daniel was correct that Jack et al was NOT suppose to be there, then PERHAPS Eloise was trying to change things by having a surgeon standing RIGHT THERE when she shoots Daniel. Not smokin' nuttin', boss, it's bad for the security clearance! *big wide smile* Oops, mixed up my islands.

Two discrete events:
1) The storm knocked out the commo so they had to turn back (to Fiji vs Tahiti); this wasn't related to Desmond or the Island.
2) Enroute to emergency/precautionary landing, 815 encounters a window caused by Desmond's failure to push the button, breaks up and crashes on the Island.

If the button pushing exercise had not been necessary because there was no energy requiring it, 815 would have arrived safely in Fiji. The aircraft would have been at least temporarily grounded while its commo was repaired.

Meanwhile, the passengers would have put up in a nice hotel for at least one night in an attempt to preclude complaints or lawsuits. Another aircraft would have been found somewhere and "815-Special" would have flown from Fiji to LAX.

Daniel was speaking out of ignorance. No one off the Island knedw about the commo failures.

I think I am buying the theory that he has been TT, I just don't know how or don't understand how he could. The only reason he did the first time was because Ben turned the wheel.

He got the notebook from Eloise at his graduation. Anyone know what was on the cover? It appeared to be some sort of "twin" symbols.

I was more curios as to why Richard sounded so certain that Daniel was not gonna shoot.

After watching it twice, I think Eloise in 1977 did recognize Daniel from 1954 by the way she said it "Who are you?" IMO, there was recognition that she remembered him from 1954. Then there was a look of horror on her face when Faraday said he was her son.

So, they are ALL variables!

That's what Daniel stated, but the episode title was singular. I think Hawking was the variable but she believed too heavily in destiny.

I think Faraday referred to Chang as Chinese specifically and not Asian. I wonder if there was a reason behind this?

Nice. "Who are you( that you can avoid aging in more than twenty years)!?"

Eloise is not a shop clerk by profession; there's too much else going on. She had to be able to see into the future to know that Desmond would want to buy an engagement ring from a certain store and to be able to arrange to be minding the store that day.

But -- in 1977 -- she can't do that yet.

I like that idea, L4E. She was pretty keen on pointing a gun at him in 1954 too.

JiG, wouldn't she be asking that of Richard then? He hasn't aged either. I think her suspicion of Daniel is more from his ability to disappear before her eyes back in 1954.

She knows Richard. Maybe it was "Who are you( that you can avoid aging in more than twenty years!? Only Richard is...)"

But now I'm guessing even more than usual. *smile*

BTW, was Charlotte-on-the-swing the same little girl (not actress) as Charlotte-in-the-garden? I think it's "yes," but...

I wonder if there was a reason behind this?Keeping in mind that I didn't grow up in the US, isn't "asian" a relatively new "PC" term? I seem to remember "oriental" was the generic term and Chinese was the specific (even if it were wrong) when I was a kid (in the late 70's).

So maybe Daniel was cognizant of that and used a term that would be familiar? Dunno.

I was thinking that too KTG. Did we see Faraday, Sawyer, and Juliet "flash" in front of her or just the aftermath? Can't remember.

Is there an off-island timeline for Faraday in this past episode? I am wondering if shooting her son got her banished by Widmore? Any possibility there?

Or maybe this is why she left? Not banished?

That is how I remember it growing up in the 70's as well. But I think he said Chinese because they ARE Chinese...no?

That makes me think of Jin delivering the stuffed panda to the baby in the hospital for Paik...I know it was a flashback and there's no way it was Chang (at least I don't think), but that's what it made me think of, wasn't there a big argument about him being in China, since the guy in the store said that pandas were lucky?

PJSander said...

There was a discussion. As I recall, Jin was in Korea, but it was the Chinese minister (of something or other) whose daughter was giving birth.

Jim in Georgia said...

Chinese:

The Panda: Jin delevered it to "the Ambassador" with the comment that Mr. Paik was eager to do business in China. It was unclear whether the man was the Chinese Ambassador to Korea or the Korean Ambassador to China who had come home for his grandson's birth.

Daniel's Comment about Miles Ethnicity: Among humans with epicanthal folds on their eyelids, there are probably more Chinese than any other ethnicity. Then again, at some point on the Kahana, Daniel may have asked. They sure had enough time on their hands. *g*

I wonder if pushing the button in the Swan Station was some kind of punishment / prison sentence? Radzinsky definitely needs a "time out" based on his erratic behavior, maybe that's where he is sent? If so, what did Inman do?

Here is another question - what is/was in those injections that Inman and Desmond got? That Claire got?

Hmmm.

I've always though that the fluid was sterile water. It's kind of like hanging the "Quarantined" sign on the inside of the Swan door.

All the bible talk on TBI got me thinking...

Remember in S2E10 P23, when Eko says the bible verse incorrectly? He says "Yea, though I walk through the shadow of the valley of death" instead of "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death." D&C claimed that it was an innocent error on the writers' part and that it made sense since Eko wasn't REALLY a priest. But what if the error was a purposeful hint for this season? What if "what lies in the shadow the statue" is the "valley of death?" Not sure where this goes next: Ben's body pit? Some other burial ground, perhaps beneath the temple? Smokey's lair?

Jim in Georgia said...

PJ, I like the comment about Radzinsky's time out!

While I was getting ready to type the above, I had another one of those thoughts. I don't know where we are in terms of elapsed time. "The Incident" occurs in four hours from whatever time it was before Dan got shot. DHARMA has to intervene to keep the energy in check so it puts computers in the Swan to allow a watch keeper to type the numbers every 108 minutes. But the Swan is a whole in the ground! It's a construction site. Or had sufficient time passed since "Whatever Happened, Happened" for the Swan to be completed?"

Good question. We know that "something" with a magnetic pull is encased in cement. Perhaps that is their quick resolution? Pour cement over it and create a valve which must be released at certain times?

Maybe the FDW is the way they release the energy for a while? Maybe someone turns it once a day and they lose someone to the future each day (like a sacrifice to the island) until they a) train polar bears to do it and then b) finish the hatch and create the computer programmed option to do it?

Okay, I am really reaching here, but I need something other than Faraday / Hawking / Widmore to think about! LOL

I'm sad we haven't gotten to learn more about Libby this season, I thought we might get more about her back story and how she ended up in Santa Rosa and on the island...I was starting to wonder if she had been one of Dan's research subjects and the insanity of time travel/conscience travel is what landed her in the crazy house with Hurley? Oh well, maybe we'll never know?

Good theory Lins!

I watched the rest of IPS and Cynthia Watros was sadly underused. I guess not every job requires the chops it takes to do a LOST scene!

I am beginning to love Tuesdays almost as much as Wednesdays! Yay LOST!

Jim in Georgia said...

Cynthia one of Dan's Subjects?

I hadn't thought of that one. Dan fled to the "States," but they didn't say where. I hope Libby's story isn't one of those things they "don't have enough time to tell." It's part of Hurley's story, too. Even given his mental state, how could he not remember her?

Widmore born or married to David Widmore? Just curious.

I forgot to *g* or put LOL, Hammer, but I hope you knew I was kidding.

In fairness, though, I probably do fall into the zealot category by technical definition, as someone who follows LOST with a somewhat fervent manner.

However, to ME, a zealot is one who is over the top in their zeal, and not just a fan, but a fanatic.

You know, the one that wears a DHARMA jumpsuit to bed; has stock in Oceanic and Ajira; consumes Apollo bars daily; has an alarm set to go off every 108 minutes; plans vacations to Guam, London, Oxford, NYC, Sydney, Korea, Tallahassee, (Not in) Portland, Los Angeles, Tunisia, Ann Arbor, Hawaii and other places featured on LOST; has a bookshelf with Our Mutual Friend, Watership Down, Ulysses, The Odyssey, The Stand, The Wizard of Oz, Catch-22, Of Mice and Men, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Little Prince, Are You There God, It's Me Margaret, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, The Brothers Karamazov, A Tale of Two Cities, Stranger in a Strange Land, The Bible, The Book of Laws, The Lord of the Flies, The Turn of the Screw, Harry Potter and every other literary work referenced.

Okay, since I named those cities and those literary works without LOSTpedia (though admittedly, I looked up the spelling of Karamazov), maybe I *do* qualify as a zealot. LOL

D & C, in the most recent podcast were asked: Because of the significant of Jin not being able to speak English back in Sep 2004, what language would he speak if the show were dubbed in Korean? The answer was that they hoped no one would ever ask them to do that! LOL

They also said Ellie killed her son, but, later in the podcast, Damon (I think) said he thinks Daniel is dead. When one of those two says "I think," grab your wallets and purses!
