Withdrawal - week two

We're heading around the corner and easing into week two. Can we REALLY say we're through the LOST withdrawal? I know that as much as I would love to deny it, I am still in the throes. While thoughts of LOST don't creep into my every waking moment, I do consider different plot points now and then.

It is generally an accepted theory that there are seven stages of grief. While I can't pretend that living without a television show is comparable to losing a loved one, I think that perhaps we might find we have our own list.

So as we continue with our numbers game, and discussing theories (because the numbers game is really just part distraction from our "loss"), consider what might make the list of "seven stages of LOST withdrawal" and add them in the comments.

Thanks.

21 - the number of episodes with Daniel Faraday. It is a bit of a stretch, but with these bigger numbers, that is where we will be going!

I think we can safely shut down this game when we get to 42. Or shall we try to go to 108?

I like a challenge!

Keep up the non-numbers game talk, folks. The numbers are just to keep our minds limber! LOL

I think we ought to try to keep going, especially if we get to 42 relatively soon. We'll know if/when the game dies.

Jim in Georgia said Tentative conclusion: Richard is and always has been the leader of the others. Other people may be led to believe that they are leading, but they are not.

Maybe when Richard Alpert arrived on the Black Rock he was the one person who did not fight, destroy, or corrupt. He is the person who secured Jacob as "the winner" in whatever debate/argument he and Beach Guy were having. Because of this, Jacob has made Alpert the leader of the Others and has made it so he doesn't age........

Well 23, I can do without looking! LOL

There was a $23,000 reward for turning Kate in to the authorities.

Psalm 23 is the bible passage that both Eko and Charlie recite (incorrectly!).

I like the idea of Alpert being the one "person" that Jacob feels he can trust. I sort of see him as the pope to Jacob's god.

No challenge here, but the LP (the source of all knowledge?) is a muddle. The page for "The Other 48 Days" says 26, the page about the Tailies says 22, and the page with the list of the people has 24 entries. Arrrgh!

That was on TBI too (though the person said they wrote - or saw - it on another blog).

That theory is ASSUMING that the A316 flight took off in early 2008 and crashed/flashed BACK to mid 2007. But I think it is more likely someone's zealous affirmation that "thirty years" has to mean EXACTLY thirty years and "three years" has to mean EXACTLY three years.

We know that the O6 were rescued in early 2005 based on the 108 days since 9/22/2004. They lived off island for "three years" and we all assumed that meant A316 left in early 2008. They landed "thirty years" later than mid-1977 (July if Sawyer is to be trusted).

I am not saying that A316 DIDN'T flash back six months, we just don't have any evidence that it did - beyond "thirty years" screen shots.

There is also speculation that the scene with Jacob and Ilana in the hospital was a flashforward.

Personally, I don't think Jacob is dead. The fire was purposeful. Rising like a phoenix? Baptism of fire?

27 - From LP: In an interview with E! in 2009, Damon stated the following in regards to the Numbers: "Here's the story with numbers. The Hanso Foundation that started the Dharma Initiative hired this guy Valenzetti to basically work on this equation to determine what was the probability of the world ending in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Valenzetti basically deduced that it was 100 percent within the next 27 years, so the Hanso Foundation started the Dharma Initiative in an effort to try to change the variables in the equation so that mankind wouldn't wipe it itself out." [1] an interesting side note to that might be that 4+8-15-16-23+42 = 0.

I spent a lot of time on the LP (well, seems like a lot) arguing that 30 years didn't necessarily mean 10957.5 days. Some people agreed; most ignored the comment. I thought D & C had made a comment on a recent podcast about Ajira 316 taking off in 2008 and crashing in 2007. I didn't hear the words in the most recent podcast with the two of them. The podcasts are mind-numbing after a while and I can't put up with another one right now *grin* so I'll just have to go on memory.

In the meantime, my version is that the Oceanic Six were rescued in January 2005 and (minus Aaron plus others) left LAX in ...approximately January 2008.

Thanks for mentioning the podcasts, JiG. There is a "post finale" audiocast with Michael Emerson which I quite enjoyed. Actually, I enjoy all the podcasts, but only because I find that I set aside time for them and doodle while I listen. (I am a relentless multitasker, so I have to have something to do. DH calls it my LOST art. LOL)

I will re-listen to the final few podcasts in time and see what I can hear about taking off in 2008 and crashing in 2007. If that is the case, then we do know that Jacob didn't die, right? Because he visits Hurley 24 hours prior to A316 taking off.

Hmmm...

As I said before, there is just no way that Jacob is dead. Or maybe he is dead, but he's got to come back somehow. That would be just too lame to introduce him and immediately kill him. That said, even ignoring the 30 years argument, I see no reason why he wouldn't be around to talk to Hurley in 2008.

Don't know if that made sense or not. I'm thinking not.

So BG goes off-island recruiting for his own evil purposes and perhaps Jacob uses Alpert to do his off-island recruiting? Perhaps that is why Alpert said, "I'm this way because of Jacob"? Interesting thoughts DocH. In short sight, it makes some of the points of the story seem petty or un-needed, like Widmore's search for the island...I'm still trying to tie that all in with Jacob and BG's quest for island "ownership" (for lack of a better word - it's late and I'm having trouble forming coherent sentences!) .

Grandpa..?

Sorry I should have explained better. The supposed ultimate time paradox is that I can not go back in time and kill my grandfather before grandpa meets grandma, because then mom or dad would never have been born, therefore meaning that I could never have been born and gone back in time to kill grandpa; as a result, grandpa would never have been killed and he could have met grandma and produced mom or dad who produced me who could go back in time... (Okay, I'll stop).

BTW, I never figured out why it couldn't have been poor grandma who got killed or, for that matter, mom or dad as long as I was not yet an item.

BG wants to kill Jacob, but he can't. What reason can there possibly be that BG can't just pick up Jacob's knife and filet him? Not the due diligence of the Metropolitan Island Police.

BG can't kill Jacob because he is Jacob's grandson and he will cease to have (ever) existed at the moment of Grandpa Jacob's last breath.

Aspirin, bring me aspirin. No! I said ASPIRIN! Oops, sorry, folks.

Anyway, why is BG "older than" Jacob? Because he did not undertake his mission until he was older. He found the Island, slipped back in time and prepared to kill Grandpa Jake. At this point Jacob told him the gritty little truth or he suddenly figured it out for himself. He's still around, looking for a loophole.

Enter John Locke, general romantic and lost (Hmm) soul looking for some meaning in his life. So BG uses his natural/learned talents to convince Locke that the Island is a beautiful place that needs him.

Of course, if Locke is dead and BG just looks like him, then it's still BG killing grandpa; BG has to get someone else to do it.

Ben's available Afterward, grandpa's still dead and BG still hasn't been born yet. How can this be a loophole that works?

I wasn't actually suggesting that BG was Jacob's Grandfather or vice versa...though it certainly gave me something to think about while mowing the lawn tonight!!!! The Grandfather Paradox is something that plagues most time travelling theories. I'm trying to figure out how/what/if Miles being a baby and an adult in the same time line and Locke being dead and ?undead?
?possessed by? ?other? in the same time line would somehow get rid of the paradox. If so, then whatever happened really did happen but can maybe re-happen with a different outcome in the present time line of the person that is experiencing it....I don't know. Brings my thoughts right back to the whole consciousness thing.

Ah, well, analyzing stuff used to be my job. I'm out of practice!

We went through a phase on the LP where people declared that it was impossible for two versions of a person to be on the Island at the same time without some cataclysmic event occurring. They based this on Dr. Chang's excited instructions not to let the two bunnies from the video touch each other.

Here comes the "weird science" part. I think the bunnies were virtually the same creature in terms of the atoms used in their construction. If those same atoms had touched... There might have been a problem with the time-shifting Losties if one had walked up and touched his/her "other self" because the Sawyer, for example, watching Claire give birth wasn't completely different than the Sawyer who was wherever Sawyer was that night. Adult Miles in 1977 was completely different that baby Miles in 1977. All the atoms that were in baby Miles' cells were long since gone. "C'mon, Miles, give your -- self -- a hug."

Miss Kim said...

LOL Tasha.

Sawyer's nicknames were something I worked on in the hiatus last year. I rewatched (and dh watched for the first time) the entire series and I posted each epsiode's nickname list! LOL

The second video was awesome. Made me think a couple of things. 1st - Christian's hair got grayer after he died. LOL.

Second, I looked at the supremely perfect casting choices that the producers have made over the years... the three stages of Hawking and Widmore, all of the child actors - Charlie, Hurley, Sawyer, Jack, Kate, Ben. So why oh WHY was the casting for Rachel and Juliet SO supremely AWFUL? And why were the set and costumes so modern? Mistake? Mis-direction?

The game, Tasha is that you pick the next number in line and say something about how that number relates to LOST. When you added the two Valenzetti numbers, you weren't far off! Another option for 50 might be the number of Euros that Avelino suggested that he and Sayid bet on the golf course.

Make sense?

Miss Kim said...If so, then whatever happened really did happen but can maybe re-happen with a different outcome in the present time line of the person that is experiencing it....I don't know.

I think what you are saying is that something can happen more than one time, but have a different outcome on one or more subsequent times, without changing the original event - that happens the same way each time. (yes, I'm just restating what you said so I can get my mind around it) For example - in a smaller way - I can read a text book on say, the kreb cycle, and not get it at all.

Event: reading the text book.
Outcome: didn't get it.

Therefore, I re-read the text book, one or more times, with the same result each time - didn't get it. Then one day, I re-read it yet again, and I GET IT this time!!

Event: reading the text book.
Outcome: I GET IT.

Applying this concept to our LOSTies, then, would allow them to repeat events in their pasts, unchanged, except for their outcomes. If the outcomes are not applyed until they "catch up with their current time line selves", they can affect the future timeline. Clear as mud? Oh well.

However, I am still not sold on the repeat-past concept. If they have been grafted into the past timeline, it has only been once - they ALWAYS have been there in 1977, no alternate timeline without them there. They have only been there once and we have just seen it. JMO :)
