Sundown

If we are continuing to follow the season one pattern for episodes, we should have a Sun-centric episode this week. That fits with the title! Last week's episode may have been figurative, but it was also very literal. Any ideas for what this week's title might mean?

(And yes, I am looking forward to the potential Charlie-centric episode next week!)

Okay, so I haven't fleshed this out yet, so work with me (or shoot it down)...

We've been told repeatedly that the O815 crash was NOT a dream and no one is going to wake up and go "WOW, did I just have a CRAZY dream!"

But... we've NEVER been told that the flashSIDEways isn't a dream! What if we are seeing the LOSTies dreams that they had WHILE they were "flashing" or something?

I dunno.

Me too. I am hoping they show him in Lompoc, or would it be San Quentin? :)

Is Hammer onto somehitng with this title ( Sundown ) that the Jin/Sun reunion is unlikely? I will have to think more on it tomorrow once the birthday buzz runs off.

I am patiently waiting for a scene with all (available actors) the characters that died on the island...standing in the temple or jungle telling the 'Jacob Warriors' how to beat the MIB.

There is the proverbial "Get out by sundown." or "Get back by sundown."

"The water isn't clear!" (Or something like that.)

The water seems to be pretty important. How long had it been cloudy? Did it become cloudy because it "sensed" the presence of someone?

I posted something back on the Lighthouse thread about Dogen backing away from Hurley. Is Dogen afraid of Candidates? Is he afraid of Jacob?

I am seriously in need of the backstories on Richard, Dogen, Wallace(?) and the blond boy.

Oh I hope so! That would be great! I have long held the belief that the whisperers are the dead folk so it would be nice to go ahead and deal with that AND get a charlie episode at the same time.

I'm going with Sun-centric for the episode. Too strong of a title not to be. Maybe Sun-down = sun dies?

Happy birthday lost4ever (if that's what you were saying).

Thanks flgrl.

I looked up Sundown at IMDB and found it was a 1941 film. The plot states: "Englishmen fighting Nazis in Africa discover an exotic mystery woman living among the natives and enlist her aid in overcoming the Germans."

There goes that whole Season 1 mirroring season 6 with the episodes/

It looks like Smoke has assembled his army.

Dead theory #1: Dogen came to the Island on the Black Rock.

What happened to Kate that she's now following Smoke?

Sawyer was nowhere to be seen. That kinda reinforces the idea that Smoke doesn't want Sawyer to see him in his destructive mode.

I liked the return of Keamy and his sidekicks. I also like what happened to them.

I gotta watch this again.

If Claire goes in there he will give her her son back. What will go wrong with that deal.

It is feeling like the new 2004 is a result of the current 2007 and the deals made there.

Dogun seems backwards. We saw his son at the audition. Was the accident after that. A choice offered by Jacob rather than a deal made with Flock?

To the Egyptians one must become Osiris. In that no one can or could deliver the forty-two negative confessions in the hall of truth, because no one is perfect in earthly life. By identification with Osiris the candidate who stands in the Hall of Truth can indeed deliver the negative confession. The reason is clear, it is not him, but him in Osiris that is delivering the negative confession. The candidate in the Hall of Truth is redeemed by his unification with Osiris. This unification in the Morning Star system takes place in the grade of 5=6, Adeptus Minor. Of the details I can speak no more.

Interesting reading

Loving the Osiris stuff and agree that the sideways time is likely a result of decisions they're about to make.

Claire's "He's coming. You can't stop him." reminded me of Jacob's "they're coming" as he died.

I can't find a screen cap of the Smoke as it passed over Claire's cave hole (right before she put the lotion in the basket ;-) )

Husband made an interesting point last night...he asked if Dogen and Lennon were dead and I said, well Sayid just killed them...and he replied, yes, but they're in that water thing, so are they really dead? Perhaps now that FLocke has had his way with the Temple, Jacob can somehow work out some healing thing? Or will they also become infected?

Hammer said...

Well Lindsay, I see a possible technicality. The sand timer...I don't know if that timer applies to MIB's dark water or not. But Jacob's clear water had a timer. So maybe if you leave them in the water for too long...no zombies.

lost4ever said...

It is feeling like the new 2004 is a result of the current 2007 and the deals made there.

Exactly. Instead of referring to it as alternate or new timeline maybe it should be called the MIB timeline?

Regarding Dogen, he also has a "new" timeline, we just never got to see his old one. When he is at the recital with his son that is also a result of the island under water, or the MIB timeline...I think.

lost4ever said...

but I SWEAR I saw images in there

I though so too but after watching it in slow-mo all I could make out was flashes of light.

After Smokey was finished with the temple and we see Claire, Kate and Sayid coming out there is faintly heard singing in the background. I closed-captioned it and it is Claire singing "Catch a falling star"...any significance there?

Hammer said...

Did anyone recognize the song Claire was singing in the hole, I think it was the same song playing in the carnage scene.

Hammer said...

Found it:

http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Catch_a_Falling_Star

Five appearances on LOST:

On the first occasion, Claire requests that the Stewarts (her child's prospective adoptive parents) sing "Catch a Falling Star" to the baby after he is born, just like her father had done for her. ("Raised by Another") It is revealed in "Par Avion" that her father is Christian Shephard, and that he sang to her as a baby (although this specific song isn't mentioned at that point).
The melody that plays on the Oceanic airplane mobile hanging above the crib in the Staff nursery is from this song. ("Maternity Leave")
Kate sings "Catch a Falling Star" to Aaron as she carries him from her car to Cassidy Phillips' house in "Whatever Happened, Happened".
Claire sings "Catch a Falling Star" when she is in The Hole. ("Sundown")
The melody plays as Sayid, Kate, and Claire walk through the temple after it had been destroyed by the Man in Black in "Sundown".

Not necessarily Hammer. Ilana can still be playing for the home team. Since Jacob has touched Sayid, and gave him this particular destiny, Sayid may be the Trojan horse, sacrificial lamb and/or Judas-to-MIB.

I like the Trojan Horse idea. However, I not sure when Ilana had an opportunity to bring Sayid on board. He was antsy about getting on 316 and they were not shown talking during the flight. What would she say? "You remember Jacob? He's the guy who distracted you while your wife got run over in Los Angeles. Well, he needs your help." Sayid was the one lostie who was absolutely forced to get on that airplane.

Are we sure we know what the home team is? Remember when Jacob was the spiritual leader of the evil Others? How did we (and that includes I) make him a good guy? Because he's quietly convincing? Because he weares a white shirt? I don't know...

Claire said she was at the Temple - when they tortured and branded her - and discovered/decided that she had become "infected". She likely met Dogen then.

lost4ever said...

Most definitely. Jacob or MIB being "good" are assumptions. The evidence so far has been circumstantial at best.

Maybe Sayid is positioned right now exactly where Team-Ilana wants (or expects) him to be.

That would be a nice twist. I think he is infected and his heart is slowly changing as Dogen said it would. He looked pretty beaten down when Ben showed up to say hello. He had the same look in his eye that Claire now does.

Hammer said...

Circumstancial? Yes. Proponderance? Yes.

IMO,using black and white in several instances and adding more 'circumstances' is what the writers intend. But, point of view is left up to us to decide. Like in the movie "V for Vendetta", the terrorists are who YOU think is wrong.

lost4ever said...

Agreed Hammer. Black/white and a whole of shades of grey. I know this is a stretch but what if him throwing the white stone off the island was representing him wanting to leave it.

Thinking more about Sayid. I don't see him joining team Ilana UNLESS she could offer him more than MIB. This dude has lost the love of his life not once, but twice. And now comes an offer for him to be with her again by MIB? I would be surprised if he is a double agent on this mission. Let's not forget Jacob was an accessory to Nadia's murder, at least IMO.

Hammer said...

I thought that about the rock throwing. But again, I think writers wanted us to see the scale tipping to the dark side.

Jim in Georgia said...

Cross off Locke

MiB did cross off Locke's number and name. There's a bunch of carping on LP about him crossing off a different version of the name than we first saw. It was probably a version O'Quinn could reach.

Dogen and Lennon dead?

Yeah I think so. The water didn't heal Sayid and I don't think it's gonna heal anyone else.

Candidate 23

The simple little fact has been out there for a while, but 23 is the only one of the six numbers that's a prime. Slipping into a different definition, does make Jack the Prime Candidate?

8) Jim

Hammer said...

I like it. Prime candidate that needs to be willing ON HIS OWN.

Circus Mom said...

Mib kills people on the other team whenever he wants to, except Jacob. And whoever (Sawyer) the boy told him he couldn't kill.

Dogun couldn't kill Sayid himself. He told Jack the pill wouldn't work unless Sayid took it willingly. He almost killed Sayid until the baseball fell and reminded him he couldn't.He was willing to have them all shot until he found out they were candidates. Or is it because Sayid is infected that Dogun can't kill him?

Rita said...

I think a key here is that Hurley said (per Ghost Jacob's instructions) "I'm a candidate, I can do what I want". I think the candidates can kill, not kill, join FLocke/Dogan/Jacob/Ilana, do whatever they want (free will), though the "others" may or may not be able to. Ben did kill Locke (a candidate), so it seems there isn't a hard and fast rule about that, but I think most of them can't. I am thinking that even FLocke can only do so much directly to the candidates - so he couldn't have killed Sayid.

I also see a major difference in Jacob's vs FLocke's approaches to the candidates. Jacob seems to want them to "choose" to do good - just because it is the right thing to do. Good for good's sake, not for what anyone will personally gain. He told Ben "you always have a choice" (about whether or not to kill him) and seems OK with whatever they choose (killing him, smashing up the lighthouse mirrors, etc.) FLocke, however, manipulates and appeals to deep (selfish)desires, in order to get people to "choose" his way (I believe - his evil way). Thus, the conversation between Jacob and MIB on the beach - "they come, they corrupt, they destroy" (close enough) "but it always ends the same" - because he can always manage to manipulate them to his side. Jacob keeps believing good can - and must- win out eventually.

Jim in Georgia said...

At least we did answer one question in this episode. Can Smoke cross the ash barrier? My take is no. Later, when he had laid waste to the population, he was able to enter because someone broke the ring. Curious that Claire understood his inability. Did she break the ring around the cabin? And who did break the barrier around the Temple? Unseen Sawyer? Unseen Jin? Sayid on his way back from their meeting?

BTW, someone dropped a line on the LP about the ash being from those banyan trees that the Losties could hide inside. Interesting, but...

Nice. I was trying to come up with something about Dogen that also related to the cabin. Maybe the single thing Dogen did was make the ash strong anywhere there was a circle. I don't know how he did that but, after all, it's the Island!

8) Jim

Lindsay said...

I think the ash definitely has a direct connection with Dogen, when Sayid came out of the pool after killing him, Lennon immediately said something to the effect of "now you let him in", which I took to mean that the ash was useless without Dogen being alive...I just don't understand what the connection is...

On the other hand, I really have been enjoying seeing Ben as a team player and not the "evil" guy we once thought he was...

Gup said...

Do you suppose that the boomerang in Sayid's flash-sideways is significant? I (if it was someone else, apologies) said earlier that the event -- be it the bomb or Jacob's death -- pushes the Losties out of real time from 1977 to 2004 but that it's not going to stick and that they'll come back to the Island in 2007. That's what a boomerang does. It's designed to hit things but return to the thrower if it misses.

Thanks, Doc. I particularly liked the theory -- and I hope that's what is was -- about Mesopotamia on page 2.

The paragraph about Ben and Sayid at the pool made me think about their joint history. Young Ben befriended Sayid in 1977 and his reward was to be shot. He was healed in the pool, we suppose. (It would be interesting to see a cure that worked; maybe this week.) As a result of the cure, Ben lost his (short-term?) memory. Ben has known Sayid since 815 crashed, but did not remember who he was until he returned to the pool and found Sayid sitting there.

DocH, thanks for the link to that compilation of bloggers' thoughts about Sundown.

I thought this myself when I saw the episode, but forgot until now to bring it up: Faustian bargains never work out as planned, and Sayid’s deal will be no different. He told Flocke about a lost love dying in his arms, whom the writers would have us think is Nadia. But she wasn’t the only one who went out in Sayid’s strong embrace, so don’t be surprised if Flocke holds up his end of the deal by bringing back Shannon instead. [MSNBC]

I also remembered something I thought when I watched a different episode. Dogen tells Jack that Sayid has a dark heart (or something like that) just like his sister. We are all assuming it is Claire - but if CM's idea that the flashsideways is a reset that still brings them all to the island, it might not be Claire.

Long time, no see, Gup! Welcome back.

Do you mean "infected" like Sayid supposedly is? Or do you mean that his body was inhabited by MIB the whole time?

I would have to think through the former a lot before getting on board, but since Locke didn't die until Ben strangled him, I would say that the latter can't be the case.

Gup said...

I'm not sure but it sure seems that he is definitely influenced by something during this time. While watching the first season's episodes I couldn't help but feel that it wasn't just Locke's "faith" at work here. The more we watched, to more it made sense to us. The dream that Boone had where Locke had one black and one white stone eyes was a little freakier to us than the first time we saw it after seeing the cave with the stones.

Jim in Georgia said...

I think "corrupted" might be a better term -- maybe for all of them. I've always thought of Locke as being tremendously naive. We saw MiB manipulating (corrupting) Sawyer but have not yet seen MiB's first contact with Locke, except for the look on Locke's face.

I would agree with Jim before Gup. Locke's 'faith' may have been being swayed from the 1st time he saw Smokey. But I don't think he was infected or possessed or anything else.

I will agree with "corrupted". They have obviously given this much thought about weaving this season in with the prior seasons. It sure makes gives you more to think about while watching the early seasons.

the well...Christian...that is when real Locke met MIB incarnate.

Oh, yeah, and also in the cabin where he got his instructions, which he then bungled by letting Ben turn the wheel. Locke didn't know who Christian was when he met him at the cabin with Claire. I'm still interested in that first encounter. "Hi, John, my name is 'MiB.' How d'ya like walkin' again?" *grin*

BTW, at the cabin Locke asks Claire where her baby is and Christian replies for her that the baby is where he's supposed to be. Yet Claire now says that her father told her that the Others took her baby. Is that the same thing? Did this conversation happen after the meeting at the cabin?

I can't find any common thread for how Claire and Sayid became "corrupted."

I don't think Claire and Sayid are 'corrupted'(my definition), they are 'infected'. Locke was 'corrupted' because he was duped into thinking he was doing good for the island...doing what was 'supposed' to be done. Sayid and Claire aren't that kind of corrupted. They seem to evil in the heart, willing to do evil things to get what they want back.

It's official. From now on, on TBI I am scanning posts for the word 'answers'...if the is a 'when are we getting' or 'where are the' in front of it...post gets ignored.

Where are all the ANSWERS? Okay..just kidding, Hammer. I just read through all the posts. I hope I didn't miss much. I have been really sick so I didn't watch it last week and just caught up on everything. I am ready for tomorrow. I guess I am going to jump over to TBI and see what Tarzan had to say.

I really like the idea of Jack being Prime candidate. Maybe we WILL get a finale of Jack and Flocke sitting by ocean and Flocke wanting to kill him, as the new group of candidates arrive:)

Maiby Jacob and MIB are 'spirits' when they die, like Jacob is now. They can take on other images and such untill they choose a form to be 'real' in. Then they are stuck untill they are killed again.

And/Or

Perhaps MIB became stuck as Flock when he let Jacob see him in that form.
