The first thing that jumps to my mind is the song that Shannon translated from the map that Sayid stole from Rousseau. The English translation of the song is "Beyond the Sea" though in the French, neither "across" nor "beyond" appear in the lyrics.
"Across the Sea" is also a song by someone named Weezer. Lyrics don't appear to be important.
Across the Sea of Suns is a science fiction book written by Gregory Benford, and published in 1984. The plot summary seems a bit remote, except for this intriguing piece:
In 2061, it arrives and discovers a primitive biological race of nomads broadcasting en-masse with organs adapted to emit and receive electromagnetic radiation; their transmissions were blurred by various nomads falling out of synch with the rest. Close up, the transmission is discovered to be an old radio show from the 1950s - the signal the EMs (as they are called) consider best to reply to Earth with.
Most likely, it refers to a "meanwhile, back on the mainland" kind of scenario. What do YOU think?

Arrgh! I've watched the sneak peeks of ABC.com and can't theorize!
8) Jim
Yeah, me to Jim. The end being near has changed us!
Me too, but I can say that I'm SO EXCITED to see what happens tonight!!!
Jeff Fahey says Frank is dead. I don't think I believe any of them anymore...
http://www.movieline.com/2010/05/losts-jeff-fahey-on-the-fate-of-frank-lapidus-and-that-machete-trailer.php
8) Jim
Jim, I just saw that interview too. Confusion is the key as a they wrap this thing up I guess.
Like I said, it's really not much of a spoiler either way as I doubt Lapidus in the crux, right?
Lapidus
Right. He's just a cab driver. I know, that's cruel. But the article makes the point that besides being good at driving airplanes, he hasn't done anything. That doesn't mean he's not important to the flow of the action. The big characters have to have someone to talk to.
Some people on the FlashForward wiki are agonizing that we call the nurse Debbie a supporting character when she hasn't done much, but it's the "little people" who grease the gears.
8) Jim
I'm more curious why it IS "across" instead of "beyond". Maybe it's more about the journey than the destination?
Shelly, maybe it's the words uttered when MIB gets his fate handed to him. "You may no longer go across the sea!"
LOL.
Unfortunatley I heard what this episode is about and I can't wait.
I am sure we all are aware by now that the finale has been expanded on Sunday May 23. I am not sure if it was mentioned here but on Saturday May 22, they will be airing an enhacned version of the Pilot
Just saw another little ditty that in my mind confirms Frank is still alive. (shameful grin)
Fair warning, Tillies. I just checked my TiVo for 5/23 and it showed the two hour retrospective at 7pm and nothing else! I told TiVo to record an extra three hours which should take care of it.
: ) P
Warning #2 - TBI has some posts talking about the episode based on previews - I skipped them.
: ) P
The evil twin!!
Did anyone catch what the twins' mother's name was? I missed it.
: ) P
Claudia.
D and C must be laughing at us that we still don't know MIB's name.
D & C aren't just laughing they're ROF.
8) Jim
Claudia was the real mom's name, but we never heard what adoptive mom's name was. I kept hoping we would find out MIB's name!!
I think we still don't know because he never had one. JMO.
So we know about the light, Adam & Eve, the beginnings of the Smoke Monster. Wow.
: ) P
So far, all I see is negativity on TBI. I don't want to soil my LOST experience, so unless things change, I think I will stay away.
: ) P
Hate fest going on at TBI... I don't know if I can deal with it tonite.
I'm okay with the A and E reveal. Males more sense than TT losties.
I definitely don't think he ever had a name, just "Jacob's brother". They couldn't help much with the sibling rivalry!
I liked the Adam and Eve reveal. I actually thought he was already dead when crazy mom slammed him against the wall. At least Flocke's behavior makes more sense now. Just wish there was time to give us the background on the mom. There's no way there will ever be enough time to get it all in I'm afraid.
The spoiler username on the LP was:
JACOBANDMIBAREBROTHERSIN23AD
I don't know if it was really 23 AD in the episode, but I don't think it matters. I also don't think we'll ever find out.
8) Jim
Yes flrgirl I thinlk we are to speculate that this light has been protected for 'ever'. No background needed for every protector in history....just the one in our story and why he is looking fdor the next.
Thanks for remembering to tell us, Jim! 23 AD is a good use of the numbers if nothing else!
Lins, that game you mentioned a while back - is that the game that MIB was teaching Jacob tonight?
Side note - has anyone read the EW article about LOST? I am afraid to, but really want to. It is so hard to be so torn!
: ) P
Yeah Jim the story likely only goes forward from now on except jacob will maybe explain the light to his replacment for us... I hope.
I came away from the episode thinking that MiB had absorbed all the light on the Island. When I saw PJ's comment about the light, I came back to reality. There was a little light left and it regenerates.
I liked the use of apparently the same wine flask in this episode as in "Ab Aeterno."
I took evil pleasure in wiping out sa bunch of hare-brained Jacob theories on the LP. I'd have wiped out the whole page, but there might actually be something good there.
8) Jim
Have any of you watched Season 1 recently enough to know if the scenes with Kate, Jack and Locke in the caves were original footage or re-shot? Evangeline looked great, but Foxy and O'Quinn both looked a little ragged.
: ) P
I think the tunnel may be the door way to hell. Killer mom said your would be worse than dead and MIB became smokey evil incarnate.
Talk on the LP says Smoke is NOT Jacob's brother. It's an interesting point. Brother floats down the hole, Smoke pours out, Brother's body is found. Too soon to throw that one away.
8) Jim
Too soon for sure but I am going with killer moms word for now. MIB came out worse than dead and wants what he wanted all along...to go home.
I felt like their characterizations were a little strange, but I guess they've probably had a long, long time to evolve into who they are now. Jacob seemed a bit dim-witted to me, but my husband made it sound nicer by saying he was just pure. MIB (poor little no-name boy) made me feel really sorry for him and he didn't seem so evil at all.
Also, casting on young Jacob was great. He had the facial expressions down pat.
LP says the "modern" scenes were reused footage. I agree, but think the were washed (term?)somehow to change the intensity of the lighting.
8) Jim
My bedtime for bonzo on TBI.

Overall... tons of answers! no new questions! (NEVER said that before). Love, luuve, LUV Alison Janney. Always have. She got the acting thing perfected. TBI is loaded with brainless primates 'tossing poop' right now - said to see the lapse.
Jacob's faux-mom (J-Mo) never offered a legit reason how she got there, or why she was the "one" protecting the "fountain of youth"... I think she is like MIB. She went in to the "source" (dead) and Smokey took her body. (how else dead she slaughter the other islanders and fill the well).
Jacob's faux-bro from another mo (J-Bro aka MIB/fLocke) is probably the one in that has the better perspective. He was the chosen one by J-Mo. Jacob is the weak link... note the wimpy youth.
Like how Alison J. had the whole Danielle hair - and will to kill persona - the entire episode. I think so much of her story when she was stabbed -- then thanked J-Bro. That is probably how J-Bro/MIB/fLocke will end in the finale... under Jack's knife... thanking him for an end to his life. (sequel = who he hands the torch-bearing off to)
The smokey reveal was a little confusing...so the MIB that we saw on the beach while Jacob ate fish and watched the Black Rock was...smokey, in the form of MIB? And Jacob understands this even though he buried (for lack of a better word) the MIB with his fake mom? I could have done with about 5 more hours explaining that whole relationship!!
So worse than dead means that Smokey kills you and takes your body and you become evil personified?
So who actually hooked up the FDW and got that working?
Ahhh! I'm going to have to watch that again!!
And PJ, I think it was Tasha that mentioned the game, I don't know if it was the same...
Lins,
I took it as MIB became Smokey, not Smokey took over MIB. "I was once a man and Jacob took that away from me." (not an exact quote)
I think Smokey in MIB form (or any dead person on the island form) is responsible for the well being reopened and the wheel getting hooked up as part of the loophole he figured out.
There are so many wild ideas and poorly constructed (not to mention strangely written) theories flying around TBI right now, that I am not sure I will make it through the day there! Hammer is one of the few voices of reason it seems.
Bunch of newbies coming out of the woodwork I guess.
: ) P
Ima tryin' PJ...Ima tryin. I want to walk away, but I've been there so long it's like I'm trying to protect the island...LOL.
DocH said...
...(how else dead she slaughter the other islanders and fill the well).
Concur, Doc!
Can we consider the possibility that Mother (capital "M;" that's the name they've settled on at the LP) is both pre-Jacob and pre-MiB? She was the protector of the Island, but she had the strength to fill in a well overnight (I think we're supposed to believe that MiB woke up the next morning; it could have been a week.) and to go the Survivors' camp and violently terminate their lease.
The other option is that she gave everything to Jacob, but that he gave away his "bad side" to his brother.
I dropped a UAQ on the LP: "Where was the Island when Claudia's ship was wrecked?" It's blatant theory begging and will probably be deleted, but what the heck? If these were Romans, they sure didn't sail to the South Pacific, even in a storm.
8) Jim
What did you guys make of the exchange Mother and Claudia were having in Latin? then Mother and Claudia exchanged odd looks as they both switched to English?
It seemed to me a hint that Mother knew they were there to exploit and 'knew' she spoke English and stopped playing 'the game' like Sayid and Patchy once did.
English
I think the producers just used a transitional tool to establish a base then get on to a language the audience can understand. Think about aboard the Russian boat in "The Hunt for Red October," among others.
8) Jim
Since I'm in Nashville, I had a stupid flood-update weather ticker scrolling across ALL of the Latin!!! SO much worse than that stupid "V" countdown clock!
So did I miss anything good? It bugs me that the English is with an American accent...since I'm guessing this is pre-America?
I agree that Faux-Mo (is M Allison Janney or Claudia? guessing AJ) went down the Light Drain and acquired her Smoky ninja skills and knowledge there. I still don't trust her. I don't know if she really gave BIB (boy in black) the game; she seems like Flocke the way she'll say whatever she thinks you need to hear to make her point.
There was one point where MIB was older and playing the game w/ Jacob and MIB reminded me of Jack. Might've been the tattoos, distrust, and way he mentioned "walking among them". I thought of Jack's tattoo...."he walks among us but is not one of us."
I didn't like the Disney cheese factor of "The Light", but I'm able to let it slide by just thinking that their "mom" is crazy.
So if they're Adam & Eve, how is MIB, circa Ricardus times, able to be MIB, Smoky, AND Adam?
ps...I have such a crush on MIB. I would cross him off my List AND my cave wall.
I suppose Jim. Richard leaned from reading the Bible. They explained how Dogan knew English and just chose not to use it at times. Jin spent 3 years learning it, I guess I just came to expect some lines that explained the jump to English.
Oh my..Oh my..oh my....I don't want to sound extremely negative. SO I will keep those thoughts to myself.
PJ, I think it is the game of Senet.
I remember saying something a couple of weeks ago about one twin being light and one being dark, so I wonder if that is why we saw the boys the way we did a couple of episodes back.
MIB's real name really better be something AWESOME...because it's killing me! I couldn't even concentrate on the show because I kept thinking..."Ok here it is. THey are going to say his name. Stay focused so I don't miss it."
Hmmm...I really need to think. I am going to go read TBI I guess. Haven't been there in awhile.
*sighs* That is way too many comments for me to read. I am not as dedicated anymore LOL.
Tasha, you'd likely get frustrated anyway.
SO I just read a theory about the episode, that is extremely interesting about how MIB was meant to protect the island in the first place. Before i post it,(it's kind of long) I wanted to see if anyone was interested....
well YES!
I think he was supposed to too; I don't believe Mother...she's Smoketastic in that she says what she thinks people need to hear.
That said, I believe her when she said MIB is special. Tho I don't know if she was the one that left the game for him.
This is what my friend thinks. Not sure what he means about the Eve split.
"i thought she was the smoke, and she expected jacob to become the smoke. and the ritual traditionally was you drink the wine, then explore the cave and become the smoke, but because jacob was so trusting, he did not go down the spring, and in sending Adam down there, it caused a split in what was Eve - as she was both the protector of the island (security system) and the bringer of pain. so now that entity is split into 2 halves, jacob and MiB?"
This is copy/pasted. What is even more interesting is what people have been adding to it...and I wanted to add she looked really interested in the black stone LOL.
"Jacob and MIB's "mother" spent the whole episode building up to her replacement. Were lead to think she has chosen Jacob to replace her duties of protecting the island. But what if she actually chose MIB to replace her job as...wait for it...THE SMOKE MONSTER! The whole episode is about her manipulation on Jacob that eventually leads him to throw his brother into the light which turns him into the new smoke monster.
She left the game on the beach to start a rivalry between the two boys. She used her "smokey" powers to appear as MIB's real mother and guide him to the others. She saw that MIB had all the qualities to be the evil smoke monster (able to lie.. ect.). What kind of woman beats a pregnant woman with a rock and steals her babies? an evil woman! a smoke monster! How did she ruin the camp and destroy the well in such a short amount of time...well, if she turned into smokey then poof! easy! She told Jacob the light was a fate worse than death. hmm..sounds like she knows from experience! She knew MIB would kill her, so she showed Jacob exactly how to get his revenge on MIB, throw him into the light! Which made MIB her replacement, which was the plan all along! Jacob was only a pawn! And just like the surprise dagger in the back ultimately killed her, you may recall Dogen giving Sayid the dagger to go kill fake locke, but he didn't manage to catch him off guard. "
I'm digging that theory. It seems so simple now, and that's usually how it goes when things get explained.
Plus I haven't had many people think she's NOT affiliated with the Smoke.
Very interesting, though why would she set up Jacob control the new 'her'.
I think Jacob is supposed to protect the source, so that there aren't SEVERAL Smokies on the Island. She knows he's naive and can't lie.
From danadrew on TBI:
Fake mom’s powers are different from smokie’s. Her victims were BURNED…smokies victims don’t look burned just tossed around and broken! Fake mom is NOT a smoke monster but a guardian with a flaming sword as taken from the bible..God places a charuib with a omnidirectional flaming sword as a guardian to the garden of eden!!!
Shelley the flaw I see in that is that MIB should be looking for replacement like Mother did...not Jacob. MIB is trying to kill all the candidates, not recruit one...no?
Hammer, I see what your saying. I still think both are needed to balance it all out. Can you refresh my memory really quick? How do we know again that these people are Jacob's candidate's? I know I should probably know this....THere is just so much to take in these days LOL.
And Jacob isn't making much sense these days. If he is supposed to be protecting the island, then why is he bringing people there? Wouldn't it be easier to just keep them all away?
Transcript from the end of season 5...
MAN IN BLACK: I am. How did they find the Island?
JACOB: You'll have to ask 'em when they get here.
MAN IN BLACK: I don't have to ask. You brought them here. Still trying to prove me wrong, aren't you?
JACOB: You are wrong.
MAN IN BLACK: Am I? They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same.
JACOB: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.
MIB sounds like his mother here...Can you see why I get a little confused?
Maybe MIB doesn't know he NEEDS to look for a replacement? He never got to hear the speech she gave Jacob at the Light.
Maybe he does know, and that's why he threw Des down the well. (not really)
Whether or not she wants MIB to replace her, I definitely think she is affiliated with the Smoke...she knows too much, I don't trust her, and she doesn't age.
She did say to MIB as a boy that he'd never have to worry about dying. I think she wants Jacob to protect the Light because she knows he will. Regardless of whether she's Smoky, Jacob/Protector, or neither...it always ends the same, the rest is just progress. Doesn't seem like she's affected that cycle.
Well this may seem way off, but I was thinking about Hammer's question. I went back and read these transcripts but can't see the episodes at the moment, I need to go back and watch...but WHAT IF JAcob hasn't been looking for someone to replace him? What if he was looking for someone to replace MIB? Maybe the guilt of what he did to his brother. His last dying words weren't anger toward MIB IMO. He says..."they're coming." As if he is warning him. It could also be the opposite, MIB is so set on getting off the island, he needs a replacement with someone who wants to stay. If I could just find some type of proof somewhere that Jacob was looking for a replacement for himself.....the only one that I have found that clarifies that is MIB and after last week's episode he isn't really that trustworthy. It might be out there and I have just forgotten.
Interesting "they're coming" theory Tasha.
I just went back and watched the Albert episode. I take that last post back now. Only thing I am completely sure of at the moment is that they were playing the game of Senet and I might be wrong about that.
Well the LP says the game was Senet.
We also know that Jacob likely resented MIB most of his life, so while he may be momentarily remorseful, I'm sure it might sting a little when MIB magically comes back to life.
When I say the light ans M said what it was I wondered if the island is a fallen star.
I also agree with whoever said the island was somewhere else at this time. The trees and plants were entirely different.
Tasha said...
..."they're coming."
Nice thought, Tasha. After all these centuries (and being murdered), is there still room for fraternal love?

About the switch from Latin to English... JimInGA is correct that it was a transition thing. They never stopped speaking Latin... we just started hearing English. They even played a little Disney/ABC pixie-dust Tinker Bell music when they made the transition. It REALLY caught my ear. (The brain said WOW - I don't think they have ever done that on the show before.)
I'll buy that Jim and Doc...don't like it, but I'll buy it.
An entire show with no english would have been hard to take. I always feel I am missing something in the picture when I have to read.
I'll buy that Jim and Doc...don't like it, but I'll buy it.
I COULD buy it, but don't like it either.
The thing is that both women, but particularly Allison Janney, were speaking AWFUL Latin. It was almost as if they were meant to look like they weren't good at it, but were speaking it until they were sure of who the other was. Kind of like the "What did one snowman say to the other" line.
What I saw was this: Allison Janney's (AJ) character was on the island "pushing the button" as it were - doing the protecting - until her replacement showed up. Claudia shows up (with a spare replacement on the way - in fact, two) and they do their code in bad Latin to establish that Claudia is the replacement, then switch to English. AJ decides she is not ready to relinquish her standing as protector. She kills Claudia and raises the boys as her own.
: ) P
PJSander said...
...they do their code in bad Latin to establish that Claudia is the replacement, then switch to English.
Strictly speaking, during the ancient period on the Island the English we heard in 6x15 did not yet exist as a language.

WHo is LizS. Why does it sound familiar?
I've about decided that no one outside the production team really knows what the date range is in "Across the Sea." A lot of people seem to be working off Jorge Garcia's blog about two millennia, but that ain't canon...
I have decided to buy a copy of Lost - the novel as soon as it's printed -- assuming, of course that someone actually writes such a book. But why wouldn't they?
8) Jim
From JinG: I have decided to buy a copy of Lost - the novel as soon as it's printed -- assuming, of course that someone actually writes such a book. But why wouldn't they?
Oh, I hope so! Especially if they answer all the rest of our questions! Lots more juicy details!! I'll even pre-order a copy if and when I ever find one :) ~Rita
Just an interesting thought...if this did all take place around 23 AD or whatever it was supposed to be, Rome would have been in charge of the "world" which to me is what it looked like most of the "others" from Claudia's ship were, makes sense that they spoke Latin and knew a lot about science (per MIB). So is it completely crazy to think that the island may have been located in the Mediterranean, say near Tunisia?
I have decided to buy a copy of Lost - the novel as soon as it's printed -- assuming, of course that someone actually writes such a book. But why wouldn't they?
I already have it on pre-order at Amazon!
*wink*
: ) P
I need to pre-order that book. This might be everyone's last chance to order their Sawyer Pillows off of Ebay!!!!
(Or is that just me..lol)
For some reason I can't find that book on Amazon. Can someone please link it? Thanks in advance!
LOL, Tasha. I was kidding. (But it is TOTALLY something I would do!)
: ) P
LOL. DocH, that is hilarious, AND a great idea!
Btw, I haven't been to TBI in about 24 hours and can't catch up. If any of you are still there, and something good gets posted, please share!
: ) P
I want a pair. (of glasses you smart alecs).
TBI in the last 24 hours summary:
Wahh, wahh...I want answers...I don't want to be spoon fed...this episode sucked...this episode was good...I thought it sucked, but now it's good...Hammer is conceited...then, I'm conceited too...
PJ - here is a link that was on TBI. Not sure if you got to it yesterday.
http://tinyurl.com/CarltDamo
Hammer is correct on the TBI assessment. Ninnies, bickering, quibbles and backstabs. Hammer has been like Tombstone Sheriff Wyatt Earp over there on TBI. Back to the wall, guns blazin' - trying not to hit the innocent towns people. Lots of foul words tossed around and he uses "hogwash" (correctly, I might add) regarding a silly opinion. -- And he gets labeled (in correctly) as 'condescending' and/or 'conceited' by the immature contributors.
There was an interesting thread on 'Garden of Eden' that melted into a poop tossing contest about separation of church and state (church and entertainment). I think the winner said something to the effect of GofEden not just a christian thing... old testament = GofE ... and basic to other religion.
THANKS DOC! (bullet ricochet) YOU GUYS STAY BACK AND KEEP YOUR HEADS DOWN, (more ricochets)I'LL HOLD 'EM OFF TILL I RUN OUT OF AMMO...SAVE YOUR SELVES!!
I like post 215 on TBI (thats how far I am reading) The 42nd ammendant.
Just listened to Jorge's podcast. The "two millennium" comment was apparently in the script:
You may recognize the dagger* as the one Dogen will give to Sayid two millennia from now.
*the dagger that was magnetically pulled to the well
: ) P
...Sayid two millennia from now.
The problem, at least on the LP, is that people take things too literally. Back in Season four, when Hurley referred to having travelled three thousand miles on Penny's boat, a "select group" was agonizing that they couldn't find a place for the Island to have been that was 15840000 feet from the holding point near Sunda.
When I was a child, people talked about Christ having been crucified 2000 years ago; by the numbers, that's not even true YET.
Actors are talking and what they say may be true, but what actors say is not canon.
8) Jim
Actors are talking and what they say may be true, but what actors say is not canon.
I agree absolutely. I just wanted to share that it wasn't just Jorge's speculation, but rather something that was in the script. Though I do realize that since it didn't make it from page to screen, it isn't canon.
: ) P
Sorry if someone has already posted this link, but I'm passing the afternoon by watching these videos and I just had to share.
http://www.theackattack.net/?p=1850#more-1850
The other people on the Island in "Across the Sea" have tentatively been named "Claudia's people" on the LP. It was also observed that the hunters seemed to be speaking Swedish(?).
So here's the question for the assembly: Who are these people?
Here's one theory (I know, there I go again! *grin*): These people are some kind of proto-Vikings who raided some Roman settlement in northern Europe. They killed the men and captured the women. That's why they speak -- something -- and Claudia speaks Latin. That puts the Island as having temporarily moved to the Atlantic -- maybe.
That's another two tidbits we'll probably never know.
8) Jim
OK, I firmly beleive there was no smoke monster until Jacob sent brother down the river (Styx). Flock says to Sawyer that he was once a man and understands what it is to loose someone you love. I think Claudia appeared as astuck spirit as did Isabella. I'm pretty sure Christian wasn't smokey, at least not all the time. Alex and Yemi were smokey.
Something has been nagging the back of my mind... The french that Shannon translated, which reminded her of a french song, was something about "le mer" - the sea. At least the song was. Across the sea? Does anyone remember the rest of it? Might be significant. Just thinking... ~Rita
The french that Shannon translated, which reminded her of a french song, was something about "le mer" - the sea.
LOL. That is what the head of the post is about, Rita! You can find more about the song here:
http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/La_mer
: ) P
The river Styx? Nice, CM, nice.
There are cast interviews at http://abc.go.com/shows/lost. They're all about the music event they had. There are sneak peeks, too. And a BUNCH of ads.
8) Jim
Haha! Thank PJ! I guess I need to pay better attention - or maybe I did and THAT'S why it has been nagging at me all week! I'll check it out, thanks again. ~Rita
Oh, I just remembered. Something else in Jorge's podcast...
He said that, in the script, there was an allusion to the "Hunt for Red October" element when Claudia and Allison Janney's character switched from (poor) Latin to English. So the reference to the "Tinkerbell" sound was a good one, DocH. I stand corrected about my thoughts that it was code. But it was STILL pretty AWFUL Latin!
: ) P
Hmmm. Just reread my post. I should explain.
I guess in "The Hunt for Red October" the characters all speak Russian to establish their nationalities, and then there is a close up on their lips as they switch to English.
Jorge thought there was going to be a close up of Claudia and AJ's lips, and was disappointed that there was not.
: ) P
A few interesting bits from the interview that DocH linked to earlier (thanks!):
Hit Fix: A couple of my readers pointed out that when Jacob sends the Man in Black down the log flume and he turns into the Smoke Monster, the light in the cave goes out. And they've wondered if that means that Smokey now is the light that Jacob is supposed to protect and that's why he can't leave the island.
Carlton Cuse: You'll get more information that will help you understand that in the episodes that follow this one.
Hit Fix: When Mother slaughters the people in the human village, the iconography looked very much like the Dharma bunkers after the purge. Was this your way of suggesting why it was Jacob might have allowed The Others to slaughter the Dharma folk - that this is the punishment for anyone who gets too close to unlocking the island's secrets?
Damon Lindelof: In terms of what Jacob allowed, what he didn't allow, what The Others did of their own volition, with Ben basically saying "This came down from Jacob" is all in the area that is subject to interpretation purposely. What our intention was is that there is a repeating vicious cycle that seems to happen on this island, where people come to the island, they try to figure out what makes the island work, and the closer they came leads them to their own inevitable demise.
CC: Like Icarus
DL: The more curious you become about why the island has its properties, inevitably the protector of the island feels the need to engage in some form of mass genocide. It was more our attempt to say that history repeats itself, and this is an ongoing and continuing motif.
- - - -
It is a long article, but worth reading and not at all spoilerish.
: ) P
That was a good interview and I'm sorry I didn't read it earlier. TPTB have spoken: We will never know Jacob's brother's name. Okay, I guess I can quit obsessing over it...
8) Jim
@ russian, Red October et el...just another example of how valuable everyone is here on Tillie Island. Now I can stop trying to figure the language swap.
Ya'll rock.
I don't know why this suddenly occurred to me, but what do the revelations from "Across the Sea" tell us about the relationship between Ben (or whoever is the current leader of the Others) and Smoke?
It would appear that Ben called Smoke at least once; that time was to tear up the mercenaries. The only time we saw him call to the entity with no name (early hint?) was when he returned to the Island to be judged.
Did the leader ever control Smoke?
8) Jim
Thanks, DocH!
The recap is up now too:
http://www.theackattack.net/?p=1885
: ) P
Someone on TBI is suggesting that Locke is the real Locke and is pretending to help Smokie and in the end will say 'surprise' and stop him.
HOGWASH!!!
Random thought...the 'light' in the tunnel...fire?
If the island is sunk (which it is in FSW), wouldn't that put out the light/fire? I still think MIB succeeds and then the FSW is when/where they 'course correct/fix' the mistake they made by changing the past.
Locke is the real Locke and is pretending to help Smokie
Huh? We saw Locke in Smoke mode zipping around the Island in "The Substitute" then converting to Locke mode and picking up a machete. The guy on TBI must be a member of the "John Locke Redemption Society." There's a chapter on the LP. *grin*

Where are you guys?! PJ? New Post? Sorry, but I'm getting awfully antsy for our final real show and no one is here to empathize with me. I've already been watching the ack videos instead of doing my work. Help!!!
Sorry - had a six hour visit to the ER last night, complete with some VERY good pain meds which knocked me out until 10am.
New post will go up momentarily.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Are you ok?
I will be fine, thank you. Long (female issues) story, which can only be told with TMI (about which I am not embarrassed, but don't want to gross anyone out!). Thanks for asking.
